Yes, I know Apple's telephone folks give out incorrect data at times, but absent some factual basis for the assertion of no GPS on WiFi only models, Apple would seem to be the more reliable source of info.

Bobbbbbb, i have been hunting over the net for hours and just found your post .. i have the ipad2 3gs. I'm despiratly trying to get GPS without using wi-fi or celldata. you said in a post that you can. How do you do that? is there an app you buy or how does it work. I would absolutly love your help with this bro!!!? you could post in here or email me at info@jerahco.com. this is my 1st post on this board. i'm a PC venturing into the apple world 😉

You don't need to do anything except turn on Location Services. If the app has it's own maps, it will use the GPS data from LS to locate you, no wifi or cellular needed. Note that for this to work, the app must have built-in maps.

ok sweet thnx paulcb do you know which app i should download.. there are a bunch .. something like garmin or tom tom where it says you know turn left on frantastic street, but theres are big money and not sure if there ones that download the maps. I have a GPS garmin unit already but i want to mount my ipad in my dash and not have to use data or wifi for the gps 😀 thnx for you help bro. by the way i know i dude who goes to your school, i'm from canada but a buddy went there.

Glad to help. I would read the reviews on the internet and make sure you're not reading a review that's more than a few months old... these apps generally get updated every few months. I have Navigon and it's pretty good. In any case, make sure you get one with built-in maps.

$50 big ones eh.. no free ones or ones that are a couple bucks that you know of? guess i need to do some homework. just need to make sure they download maps and then i dont need data or wifi 😀

There are a few free ones (MapQuest being one) but they don't have built-in maps. FYI, I bought Navigon for the Central USA for $15 when it was on sale several months ago.

One way is to look at the size of the app... it will most likely be greater than 1G with built-in maps and much, much less without built-in maps.

i'v only been able to find one .. just gonna play with it once its installed but its 2GB its called NavAtlas. if i don't need data or wifi were set ... i think its for iphone only but lets see 😀

Google for iPad navigation app reviews. They will point out which ones have built-in maps.

I'm a pilot and use the IPAD 2 3g 64 strapped to my leg with my flight plan loaded and all world flight maps including arrival and departure sheets which number over 5000. This would kind of prove that you do not need to be hooked up to a network through wifi or 3G to use GPS. The IPAD has been approved by the FAA as a certified GPS navigation tool.
