Can't Get Home Sharing to Work

I bought Apple TV 2 about 3 months ago, but I've never been able to get home sharing to work.

WiFi is working. I can watch content from services like YouTube etc.

However when I go to the "Computer" option. It keeps telling me to turn on Home Sharing on my i7 iMac for my account.

I check itunes, and make sure it's launched with home sharing turned on, by no devices ever show up under "Shared". After tuning home sharing on and pressing "done" the "shared" menu option in the sidebar disappears.

I've tried messing around, manually entering IP addresses (as mentioned here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3509 , but don't really know what I'm doing in that regard and haven't been able to solve the problem this way.

I just got my Apple TV home and was experiencing the same issue. I have gone to Preferences/Sharing and turned on the Home Sharing option. My MacBook Pro wasn't showing up in the 'Computers' menu on the Apple TV.

However, there's a 'Turn on Home Sharing' option under the 'Advanced' menu of iTunes that has done the trick. When you select this option it will prompt you for your Apple ID and password. Once entered everything worked fine. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4352

I don't know whether I'm just telling you something that you already know but this worked for me.
