I would like the answer to this question. I am unable to upgrade to Snow Leopard since Apple decided to discontinue the IBM chip support and move to Intel only. This machine does everything my family needs and I have a PowerMac to cover my needs. A software package I am trying to use cross-platform runs on Java 1.6+ and so it looks like I am now stuck.

I installed(or so I thought) Java update 9 for OS 5 but it just doesn't show up in System Preferences/Software Updates/Installed updates. Attempted several times but still no go.
I don't want to install OS 6, since it's been buggy for too many folks( many of my Mac using friends and colleagues have experienced trouble after installing it).....Don't want to spend the possibly many hours it'll likely take trying to sort things out.
OS 10.5.8 is rock solid for me and I'll stay with it 'till OS 7 comes along and gets the anticipated early bugs worked out(hopefully).
So I guess that I'll just have to do without Java update 9 for now.
My question is "what's preventing update 9 from being successfully installed"??
