iPad and Smartboard use in Education

A question for developers - can I link my iPad to the Smartboard in my classroom ?
If not could an app be designed to do this ?
( The Smartboard links to the class computer at the moment and has a touch sensitive screen).
The possibilities for displaying and using interactive lessons using an ipad seem quite exciting, and also opens up a lot of opportunities for lesson apps to be made for the ipad !!
If an app for this already exists could someone tell me it's name .
Many thanks.

It looks like I am going to be getting the Apple TV and converter. There are two VGA cables coming from the SMART board. One is plugged into the computer. The is used between my document reader and the iPad2.

I see on the control piece- where you turn the SMART board on and off, that there are RCA plug ins.

I would like to set up a situation where I will not have to unplug the VGA cable that is being shared with the document reader and the iPad. I would like to be able to connect it to document reader and leave it connected. With the Apple TV, connected to the converter, can I plug that- with the proper cable-into the RCA plugs ins on the SMART board?

Thank you

I have read through this entire thread and have seen some very good solutions for people who want to mirror/project from their iPad to the smartboard. I've also seen suggestions for controlling a laptop from the iPad. The problem with these suggestions is that it only addresses the problems of communication between devices on a one-way street. In other words, it provides ideas for getting content from the iPad to the smartboard. I have a 3rd generation iPad and I can do this with a 30pin to VGA adapter.

The problem no one is addressing is the road block in communication coming from the opposite direction. In other words, a way for the Smartboard to communicate with the iPad.

When both devices are able to communicate back and forth, then a teacher will be able to interactively use apps with the entire class.

A side note, stick to the problem at hand. It is not helpful when comments are shared like "the smartboard is not post modern technology and should be gotten away with." Ther are MANY classrooms who do not have smart technology available to them. Additionally, it is even more naive to say "just use the iPads they do everything the boards do and they do it better." This may be true, but the reality is the number of classrooms who have access to a class set of iPads is the minority.

Focus on the issue! How can we receive input on the iPad from a smart board?

I don't want to hear you can't. If I can't right now with current technology then ok, but if there is new technology released that makes this possible, then I want to hear about it.

VERY well said, Erika from Tulsa!

You have hit the nail on the head, so many times, but I will repeat them:

>The problem with these suggestions is that it only addresses the problems of communication between devices on a one-way street.

Exactly right. People are not getting the original question.

> I have a 3rd generation iPad and I can do this with a 30pin to VGA adapter.

Correct! Nothing genius about that!

>The problem no one is addressing is ... a way for the Smartboard to communicate with the iPad.

Spot on! That's what I was saying way back in the early days of this thread, but got shot down by...

> It is not helpful when comments are shared like "the smartboard is not post modern technology and should be gotten away with."

Exactly! That is not helpful and shows elitism - something Apple should avoid projecting.

>How can we receive input on the iPad from a smart board?

Ah! The CRUX of the matter... And it *IS* possible... If Apple allowed it. Technically, there is NOTHING stopping this to work, as iPads allow input connections from BlueTooth devices like Keyboards. And I have seen a video of a jailbroken iPad having a BT mouse connected to it. Here is a link to see it yourself:

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2010/05/jailbroken-ipad-bluetooth-mouse-support.html

Likewise, there are Smartboards that use BlueTooth to talk to the computers, and the interface is just like a mouse interface. So technically, there is NOTHING stopping this from working... Except Apple don't allow the connection of mice to their iPads.

Other tablet devices do allow it... Works fine on just about any Android device and the new Windows 8 Surface device even has a BT trackpad in it's cover - very clever. Not that I am recommending you use any of those... But maybe Apple might change it's philosophy when the MS Surface starts making inroads into education because the Surface WILL work fine with your Smartboard.

I just hope Apple wakes up BEFORE the MS Surface gets a toe-hold. It would be a very sad day for me if I heard a mass purchase of Surface devices in schools because they can work with your Smartboards, and iPads miss out.

Good luck... Sadly, the answer at this moment is - You Can't do it because Apple don't want you to, and so this answer leads to: You will need to look at other devices, if this is a critcal issue.

Please Apple... Allow mouse input to the iPad.

PogoPossum,

>You can't create SmartBoard lessons on the iPad, because there is no Smart software for the iPad.

See, there you go again... Laying blame where there is no fault.

There are over 700,000 apps I can run on the iPad... Just becuase Smart have not made any has NOTHING to do with it. I don't want their software - I just want to use their smartboard... And I *DON'T* need software from them to make it happen.

All that needs to happen, is Apple allows BT mouse input.

Please... Be honest... Don't cloud the discussion with false allegations and mis-truths. (I swear you would do well as a politician! Say something often enough and it almost becomes the truth, right?)

The only people at fault here are Apple, for not allowing mouse input. That is all. And I know why they don't let it happen - yet. Because they fear allowing mouse input to the iPad would cannabalise their laptop sales.

But when MS Surface comes out, and the IT propellor heads in the schools, that hate Apple for some stupid reason, get their hands on it and show to the usually tech illiterate headmaster that "Hey look, this Surface thing works GREAT with our smartboards..." Bam! iPads are off the list!

I HOPE this does not happen and Apple wakes up... Before it is too late!

Hi,

I want to thank everyone for all the great information that you have all posted! It is much appreciated. 🙂

So, here's are my questions:

I have a new Smartboard and an iPad 1. Is there a way to mirror? I heard no, but was hoping that there was a work around.

My smartboard is in the middle wall of my library media center and not all of my students can see it, so I was thinking of getting 2 flat screen monitors and mounting them on the two walls adjacent to the left and right of the Smartboard to mirror what I am doing on the Smartboard.

Does anyone know the best way to do this?

Any recommendations for good quality, but not too expensive flat screen monitors?

Thanks in advance and I know my students will appreciate learning about iPads and actually being able to see what's going on.

I've only just been googling the same problems recently after giving up a couple years ago when Smart were in app development.

So the Smart notebook app was released a couple days ago (yay) and although it has limited functions on the ipad I han email the notebooks to myself and use them through the ipad.

...But they lied. When developing they said there would be bluetooth ability? I can't find it/ work it out.

I have a theory if anyone can help me:

I could connect to the smartboard from my ipad by hdmi cable and airplay from my ipad to my hdmi projector?

Would that work? The hdmi on the smartboard had the touch element and then the screen should mirror wirelessly if I connected an apple tv right?

School goes back in a week and I'm trying to get my head around all this!

Dear Erinnx, your theory is correct.

In the Description of the SMART Notebook for iPad app there is a brief statement about displaying content. It says: "Show content from an iPad on an interactive whiteboard for the whole class to see using AirPlay and an Apple TV or using an HDMI or VGA cable with the proper connectors".

I'm assuming you prefer a wireless connection based on your interest in Bluetooth support. For further information about using Airplay, there is a page titled "How to use AirPlay Mirroring" with an iPad generation 2 or 3 on Apple Support. It is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209

Also, there is a software update to SMART Notebook for iPad which is coming soon which addresses feature requests we have received about this app.
