Why can't we edit our posts?

Why can't we edit our posts?

I've just created a post, posted it, then re-read it and realised I've mis-spelt another users name. No problem, I think. I look for the Edit button and ... oh dear ... there isn't one!

Come on Apple - we're not all so perfect that we never make mistakes and want to edit them afterwards.

Loads of other forums have an Edit button - so why not Apple?

You can for the first 15 minutes. The button is the balloon with the pencil to the left of Reply above the message.

Thanks guys. I never noticed that symbol.

Still think it would be easier to spot if it just said EDIT though - I'm sure I'm not the only one who's missed it

And another thing - all the other symbols on the page have a text explanation beside them - so the EDIT symbol just looks like its part of the reply symbol. Just a little inconsistency in an otherwise beautifully laid out forum

Hi Nick,

Not concerning the edit function but I wanted to let you know that there is a built-in Spell Check button in the reply pane of the Apple Discussions:

This may not be of much help for users names but will greatly reduce your need for edits. Just wanted to let you know if you were not aware 😉

Firefox does that for me without even having to click the check button. Not that I don't make heavy use of the edit button as soon as I see all the typos I didn't spot and made their way through anyway. 🙂

Although, just to be really pedantic, I should point out that its an American spell checker.

In England, we spell 'realised' with an 's' not a 'z'.

Yep.

Your Spell Checker needs work.
It needs to know the location/preferences of the Reader not the typist.

Except, the Firefox spell check is very flawed. It often tells me I'm using words that don't exist. Leaves me scratching my head, so I open up the dictionary or search the word online and see I'm not wrong.

BTW, I've never tested this to see just how long, but I am an inveterate editor and have discovered that if no one else posts after you, and as long as you keep editing inside fifteen minutes, you can keep the edit time going far beyond the original fifteen. I think anyone who's been here a while must know this.

Ahh, but you're posting on an American run site...therefore, your spelling should be in the American form of the word/s 😉 (just kidding 😀 )

Sorry, I didn't notice your location when posting. I wasn't trying to point out your "spelling" of realized/realised but rather just that there was a spell check function of the reply pane. That is why I mentioned, below the illustration, that the spell check most likely would not help with most user names as these are often flagged by the spell checker as erroneous spellings of word. Still, could be of some help, I suppose.

I wish that spell check would flag the word you, for me, as I always seem to type too fast and my "your" will often come up as "you" and omit the "r" 😉 I see this very often with other posters replies as well so I know it's not just me. Not sure why but I do notice it quite often. It will show up in instances where I might be typing "you computer...." when it should be "your" of course. Can't tell you how often I've had to "edit" that misspelling!

And can you believe that the spell check flags my name "littleshoulders" and let's not forget the inevitable "Ahh" 😉

The thread seems to have wandered a bit from your main problem. The 15 mins stuff is useful. You can always repost and say sorry to the other user for the misspelling of their name.

I just made a post from my iPad 2 and I do not see anywhere a way to edit my post. Is this just on the iPad interface ? BTW I don't see the editing tools either, I was used to when using my MacBook Pro. I'll have to check if they are gone on the computer platform too.

There is currently no edit function available with any iOS based device. This may change with the release of iOS 5 in the fall.

Ugh, i realised i mispelled my software version as "Numbers 2.1" instead of "Numbers 3.1" after 1 day. Now everyone is asking me about what is "Numbers 2.1"... C'mon Apple u can do better than this, its just a forum and not some sort of "super advanced i device"...
