HP w2207h Monitor not working with Mac Mini

I am trying to connect an HP w2207h monitor to a Mac Mini via an HDMI cable and can't get it to work. The monitor repeatedly alternates between black and the view that the computer is displaying in a sequence of about 2 or 3 seconds black and 0.1 second of desktop. If I push on of the adjustment buttons on the monitor, then the desktop will be displayed for a second.

I have successfully used the Mac Mini and HDMI cable with my Samsung LCD TV which suggests that the problem is not with those components. I also have successfully connected Windows laptops via both HDMI and serial cables. Suggestions--perhaps a setting on either the Mac Mini or the monitor that is needed?

I had similar problems. The problem is, I am in Europe where the monitor is 50Hz. The actual resolution of the monitor was possible to select, but the Hz only shows 60 as a possibility. So I used SwitchResX. First I picked a resolution there of 1080px50. That stopped the flickering, but then not all off the screen was visible, then I needed to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050x50Hz (needed to switch off System Integrity Protection to be able to do so). Then restarted and then 50Hz became an option in the System Preferences - Monitors and the monitor works fine now. Needed to press +Select on the monitor to be able to see what I was doing during the flickering. So now when the MAC starts it still flickers but becomes totally fine once it is booted. And I switched on SIP again.

Try starting the mini while pressing and holding the Shift key. This is a self-diagnostic startup so be patient as it takes longer to boot. You can release the Shift key when you see the silver screen with the spinning cogwheel.

If the HP displays properly, check in System Prefs/Displays to see what the resolution is that is selected. Restart normally and set the resolution the same.

No, I was not able to get the mini to work with the HP monitor via HDMI and have purchased an Acer monitor which works great. I did not try the VGA adapter with the mini.

I did try the HP monitor with winblows laptops using both VGA and HDMI and it worked fine. That suggested to me that the problem was not a hardware issue.

Should Apple do something? Of course, but I saw no prospect that they would do so within my time frame for having the mini up and running.

hi,

I've a mac mini with w2207h too.
hdmi is not working (flashing screen).
VGA connection works, but with poor qualtity (analog).
my current solution: minidisplay port -> DVI -> HDMI works
I bought an minidisplay -> hdmi cable: it was working fine until apple upgraded to 10.06.7 -> flashing again.

this is strange:
minidisplay -> DVI -> HDMI works
minidisplay -> HMDI directly doesnt (what happens within this adapter? 🙂

so try min-dvi-hdmi scenario.

this is definitly an apply driver problem.

hope it helps.

Thanks, yes it does seem like Apple could do a better job with the drivers.

For me, the problem is solved, but not in the way I had hoped. I gave up on the HP monitor and bought an Acer that was advertised as Mac-compatible. I hooked it up and everything was good--except for the HP monitor sitting in the corner of the room.

A FIX USING JUST THE HDMI CABLE:

I was having the same exact problem, but just now managed to get my brand new Mac Mini to work with my HPw2207h using just the hdmi cable. First temporarily connect the mac mini to any other monitor or TV that will work with it. Open the "display" window under System Preferences (which you can get to by clicking the apple logo in the upper left screen corner). Disconnect from the first monitor and immediately connect to the hp monitor (without of course shutting down your computer in the process). Once the hp detects the mac mini and starts doing the flickering thing, hold down the monitor's auto/select button and the "+" button right next to it with one thumb, keep them deepressed -- the screen image should actually stay solid for a second or two, hopefully long enough for you to have a good look at the display window you opened in the previous step and move the cursor with your free hand to a resolution setting other than the non-functional 1680 x 1050 setting; the one immediately below it, 1600x900 seems to work. If you loose the steady image before you do all that, just press and hold the two buttons again and try to get that cursor over a good display resolutuon, then click, wait a few seconds, and whalah, hp monitor will be colorfully filled with your mac mini output, with no flickering,

A few more thoughts: I don't think this had anything to do with my success, but before I tried all this I held down the hp's on off switch for 30-60 seconds to "reset"the monitor - something I read in another thread. Also, if you are having trouble actually seeing what resolution your cursor is on during that precious, yet brief flicker-less moment just try clicking any resolution, with the exception of 1680x1050, they all work. If you click one and nothing happens, it may just be because a dialogue box popped up with a warning about things not displaying properly if you switch resolutions, just press your keyboard's return/enter key which should hopefully register as having pressed "ok" in the dialogue box. Once you've gotten any resolution to work, you can then see enough to test the others to find the best one for you.

ONE POSSIBLE PROBLEM THOUGH: While my monitor now displays clear, vivid images at 1600x900 (and 720p and 1080p) none seem to be displaying text with the crispness I would expect -- everything is perfectly readable, just a tiny bit fuzzy (just the text not the images). Is there some sort of text setting I can adjust? Or is it just that this monitor really needs 1680x1050 settings for perfect text crispness? If so, I may still be tempted to buy the adapters described above.

You can use HDMI cable with HP w2207h directly,No need for other cable. but please follow these step.

1.Find LCD tv to set up first step.

2.Connect HDMI cable to LCD TV(i use Samsung) and adjust to HDMI source.

3.Open Mac mini.

4.Open system preference.

5.Click "display" you will see that the primary setting is :1680*1050 that HP monitor did not support.

6.Unplug HDMI cable from LCDtv (no need to shut down) and plug into HP w2207h.

7.the screen still blinking, it is ok.

8.On HP monitor, Push down button "Select" and "+" and the same time and hold it.

9.Use mouse or down button on keyboard to choose screen resolution to be "1600*900"

10. Then the screen will not blinking and you can use your lovely HP w2207h

if you want a high resolution on screen.

1.Buy new LED monitor that support 1680*1050 resolution.

2.Buy Mini displayport to DVI for digital signal Mini>DVI>HDMI.

Enjoy your MAC. because i am new Mac user with my MAC mini 2011
