iMovie '11 no longer finds my videos from (referenced) iPhoto '11

I'm not sure why, but now iMovie '11 no longer finds the videos that i have in iPhoto '11. It just says "No video clips match the current selection. Choose a different option from the Show pop-up menu, below." Is anyone else having this problem? Mine is a referenced library by the way

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I don't know what a "referenced" library but it sounds like perhaps one that is accessed with more steps involved, not directly.

Are you able to get the iPHoto '11 videos out to your Desktop and then have iMovie '11 import them? Or do you mean that you are actually not able to access your videos, period? If so, then from my humble beginner opinion I would start figuring out how to solve "pathway" problems.

I vaguely recall other users having this problem. I think the recommended solution is to set the iPhoto preference for "Importing" to "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". This option is the first item in the Advanced tab in iPhoto Preferences (from the menu item iPhoto>Preferences). My understanding is that if iPhoto is referencing photos and videos from outside of the library - that is, from other folders or locations on your internal or external drives - iMovie may not recognise them in some circumstances.

Sorry I can't be more definite about this without doing some research. Try copying one of the videos to the Library, then open iMovie to see if it is recognised. You mention that you have a "referenced library" - that triggered my memory of this issue.

Another option is to create a Smart Album in iPhoto containing just the videos. That may trigger iMovie to see the videos. To do this, in iPhoto's menu go to File>New and select Smart Album. In the window that opens give the album a name, such as Movies. Then for "Match the following conditions" select Photo..is..Movie from the drop-down boxes.

Thanks for the suggestions....a "referenced' library means that the photos are not actually imported into iPhoto. They are just linked to the originals in their original folders. Same goes for the videos too in iPhoto. In iMovie '09 it found the iPhoto videos just like it normally would. However, when switching to iPhoto '11, they no longer do. I don't want to import the videos into iPhoto because i don't want duplicates of everything....i'm thinking maybe there is a plist that needs to be deleted somewhere, but i have tried a few and still haven't got it to work.

Did you try my other suggestion regarding creating a Smart Album? I don't think you need to import the videos to the iPhoto Library when creating a Smart Album - it should work either way. The Smart Album just references the videos wherever they are on your system. It's much the same as creating normal Albums - nothing is copied, simply referenced to the original file wherever that resides.

I mentioned the Smart Album option as I had read on a forum that iMovie recognised iPhoto videos once the Smart Album was set up - although the post related to iMovie '09. It's worth a try!

I am fairly new here, but my problem is identical. I had no issues until the most recent software update; is it possible this is related? I've tried the above suggestions, but no change. When I open imovie '11, it either shows iphoto videos as an event, but then says "No video clips match the current selection. Choose a different option from the Show pop-up menu, below." OR it doesn't show iphoto videos in the Event menu at all. Since nearly all my videos come from iphoto, I'm stuck.

Drag one of the videos from iPhoto to the Desktop. A copy will be placed on the Desktop. Now import that copy to an Event in iMovie (File>Import - Movies). If this process is successful, it will tide you over until a proper fix is in place (hopefully from an Apple software update). If this works (as it should), at least you can begin to edit just those videos with the highest priority - you never know, you might even decide to import all of the iPhoto videos to iMovie.
