MacBook Charger Melted Cable

I've just seen my MackBook Black (2007/8) charger melt through its own cable. The cable has melted where the magsafe cable meets the adapter.
It hasn't been against anything hot, it has definitely melted through itself, for whatever reason.

What recourse do I have? Am I just left in a position where I'll have to fork out for a new charger?

Short circuit. Some component failing. Charger getting hot normally and being held against wire?

Probably, unless you have some sort of warranty or this is a subject to a recall. I checked online and didn't see anything about a recall.
