Log out - Login Display changes resolution 1152X720

I have a 2011 MBP 15.4" 2.2Ghz i7, I also have single user sign on turned off so you have to input your user name and password at startup. On first boot up everything works fine. But if I log out and the log in (immediately or later don't matter) the screen resolution changes to 1152X720. I can go to display under system preferences and change it back to 1440X900 but it says its limited to 1152X720 usable screen. It also shows to display windows as if there were 2 displays attached but both show as Color LCD. I have to reboot the computer to get it to go back to 1440X900. Any Suggestions? Thanks.

Thats odd that is does not exist. Mine recreated after i deleted it back to factory defaults. My only suggestion would be to create the file and put in the factory defaults. Here is what is in mine:

Well my problem did NOT go away either. At the Apple Store, I had 3 geniuses help and no one could figure it out. AppleCare top support people as well. No one knew. Hardware checked out. Software seemed fine. Solution? They gave me a new machine. Not what I was hoping for as I wish they found the answer. However, the unit is said to go to Apple diagnostics and they will trouble shoot it. Hopefully, someday we will get an answer. Until then, I wish everybody well and hope this doesn't happen to everybody's MBP 15 i7.

One question - how did all of you bring in your user (home) files, if you did. I had dragged over my home folder so there was POSSIBLY an issue in there that the new i7 doesn't like?

If one of you above, did NOT bring in a home folder, that would get rid of one culprit.

So Apple gave me a new machine and I wanted to narrow down the possibilities for why this is happening. It has nothing to do with bringing in a Home folder or not migrating over. It is either a serious hardware, firmware or system software issue, IMO. Which is another way of saying that nobody knows yet. This problem is happening on my new machine now. It took a week to develop, similar to my last machine. Makes me think it is a hardware issue. But, we'll see in time. For now, i reported the new machine problem to Apple and wil restart and zap the PRAM to get back to my normal screen resolution.

I've been having the EXACT same problem with my machine. I went to the Genius Bar today and had them take a look at it. They fixed it, although I have no clue what they did. I got home and the behavior came back.

I don't have a com.apple.windowserver.plist file in the Preferences folder, for some reason.

(I've also found that after I log out and close the lid, then re-open it, the log in screen is frozen. Is this happening to any others?)
