iPad "Not Charging"

Yes, that's a no-brainer. If you're confident that the receptacle is good, contact Apple.

The way to double check is to see if you can borrow a friend's adapter and if it charges then, you will know for sure - as long as you use your USB cable with the borrowed adapter. If it doesn't work with the borrowed adapter it could be your cable as well. If it does charge with the borrowed adapter, it's not the cable, it is the adapter.

The safest bet would be red555's suggestion after trying the pug in different outlets around your house. Your iPad is still within the one year warranty period, so nothing will come out of your pocket.

my iPad has suddenly stopped charging after only 2 months - have tried what is suggested, surely it shouldn't have an issue this early?

I got my iPad 2 on Saturday and used it until the battery shut the unit off today. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via Parallels and selected Mac OSX as the connection. iTunes started and said the iPad was sync'd to another computer (which it is) and I cancelled any options to sync with the current computer.

There is a message on my iPad saying "not charging". I tried plugging it into the usb port in my 2011 Honda Odyssey (which keeps my iPod charged) and got the same message. I am assuming the iPod usb cable will work with my iPad 2? The only other thing left to try is using the original cable with the computer my iPad is currently sync'd to or trying the power adapter.

Any other ideas??

Try the adapter (if by that you mean the power block that came with the iPad - plugging it into the wall socket).

Not if they don't supply sufficient charging current. The charger that comes with the iPad provides 2 amps of charging current. The others probably supply less. If it's too little, the iPad will not charge unless it's in sleep mode.

No. To charge properly, you need a USB connection that provides 2 amps (10 watts). Most provide significantly less, in which case it will charge but extremely slowly and only if powered off.

Thanks, I'll try it with my iMac when I get home. If that doesn't work, I'll try the wall adapter before making a trip back to the Apple store. Thanks for the replies.

Also, be aware, that the "not charging" indication will come on when the iPad is, in fact, being charged extremely slowly.

kayjh: that is strange but true. The iPad usually says not charging when it's getting low charge current from a USB port...

Actually I feel a bit foolish. It helps to read the on line manual for the iPad which reads:

"If your Mac or PC doesn’t provide enough power to charge iPad, a Not Charging
message appears in the status bar. To charge iPad, disconnect it from your computer
and connect it to a power outlet using the included Dock Connector to USB Cable and
10W USB Power Adapter."

I note from the link in a previous post that my 2007 MacBook Pro might not have the higher power needed to charge my iPad. I'll check out the charging on my 2009 iMac 27" when I get home and also with the wall outlet. 🙂
