15" Macbook Pro 2011 - Screen too Dark

I'm struck by how dark my new 2011 15" Macbook screen looks compared to my previous 2008 Macbook, and my external display. Even turned up to full brightness, the internal display whites are nothing more than warm greys.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Well... I feel like I am in yellow screen **** (the guy with the horns runs it).
Thank you for the screen model numbers. The 15" model numbers seem to be different from the 17" numbers. So I don't know exactly what they mean. What I do know is that when you copy and paste the following UNIX command into the "Terminal" app, you get your LCD part details:

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

The result should look something like this: LP171WU6-TLB2 this is a 9CCE LG Philips screen. Depending on the screen version you will get a different code.
If you copy and past the code in google you will find information about the screen such as technical specifications and the manufacturer. There are two manufacturers used, Samsung or LG Philips. My guess is, if you have a Samsung screen you are cursed with a sepia/yellowish tint and when you have a LG Philips screen you are blessed with a true white screen, maybe even a bit blueish (certainly closer to white than yellow).
Conclusion: make sure you'll get the LG Philips screen.
Yellow hurts my eyes, if I want something yellow, I'll make it yellow...

Tomorrow I am returning my 17" with the same issue. Apple will exchange it (no problems there) with a new one but I am very worried that I will get another 17" with the same yellow/sepia screen issue... I am just guessing but I think there is something wrong with the video card and not the screen itself. Hope I am wrong.

I am glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this. I posted about this here:

and got no feedback at the time.
I exchanged my 13" MBP i5 for a 13" i7 (they were out of the i5 and I would have had to pay a restocking fee if I just returned it -- thanks a lot Microcenter). The new one is perhaps less yellowish, but it is definitely not as bright (or white) as the 2010.
I, too, suspect this is a problem with the integrated graphics. What a terrible idea it was for Apple to switch from a discrete graphics card!
When you pay top dollar for a laptop, you expect to have a superior screen. This is most definitely not.

Talked with apple support today and I sent him pictures comparing my 2010 and 2011 macbook pro 13 screen. He advise me to take it to apple store to get the issue verified with an apple tech. Which the tech did notice the yellowish sepia tint, but wont issue an exchange because it was purchase at best buy. So now I am at best buy transfering my files to the new macbook pro. Keeping my fingers cross that when I take the new one home the screen will be bright white and not yellowish.
I have a strange feeling that apple knows about the issue by the impression I got from the apple technicians. If this is your 1st macbook you might not notice the tint, I own three so far upgrading every year since 09 and to me the yellow sepia tint is clearly visible. In my opiniin I think it is the new intel3000 graphics card that is built in with the 2011 macbook pro line. I hope I am wrong. I will find out when I get home.

i've noticed this too! especially the text seems blurry or maybe its just my eyes. anyways i took mine to the genius bar today to have it checked and the technician ran tests on it, the results are nothing wrong with it! i also compared it with the ones on display they all seem the same. i am however eligible for 14 days returns policy..deciding on returning it or not..hmm

Here's an update, When I got home and check the display. Although less noticeable than the previous, the screen still has a yellow tint. Side by side with the 2010 model, 2010 is brighter and white as snow. But what's interesting was when I was playing around with the display color setting, I noticed that their are now two Color LCD display profiles. One was the default setting on the new macbook and the other was the setting that was saved during the file transfer from the previous macbook that was exchange. When I click that old setting the screen turn more yellow/sepia. It must be a color calibration issue and something that apple could easily fix with an update. I missed a call from an apple rep yesterday and I tried contacting him via email and left a voicemail message. I'm hoping to hear from them soon to update them with my experience. Hopefully this issue will be resolve soon because I'm to the point of just returning it and getting my money back. I would love to keep it by how fast the new i5 compare to the 2010.
