Xeon x5355 processors models that fits 2006 pro 1.1

I'm about to get 2 of these guys, but i am confused about why there are different models with the same name.

many sell x5355 but they are called SLAEG, some others call them with another sequence of letters (SL9YM) , while buy.com says that it is a single core processor.....guess they just had too many drinks while writing the specs 🙂

Which one is the right one for the mac pro 1.1? And is suggested to get them new or used are fine?

Thanks!

NP 🙂

OK, so the processors are fine....now if they are the same specs they should work.

10.6.8 is fine; That's what I had when I swapped the CPU, so should not be a problem.

No video may be normal; if the CPU is not booting the EFI you won't get any video output; it is probably stopping at the low level boot (kinda like the bios check that you see on a regular pc).

So the red led are the cpu ones? Sorry, you mentioned the ram slot so I made confusion among the 2.

Can you check the specs that you have in system profiler? These are mine:

Boot rom Version: MP11.005C.B08

SMC version: 1.7f10

Bus speed: 1.33 GHz

Can't get any info on the processor, other than the speed (2.66, 8 core 8MB L2 cache); I am curious to see if you have anything different.

There is also a possibility that you burned the processors touching the pins; but that would happen also on your old CPU, so I think that we can exclude that option 🙂

Ok, so my mac is a little different. Just the boot rom is different.

Boot rom Version: MP11.005D.B00

SMC Version: 1.7f10

Bus Speed: 1.33

Just looked at the NEW pair he sent me today. Those are SLAC4 not SLACG. This must be why the new pair are not working.

This might mean that the SLACG pair he sent me ARE actually bad (or at least of one them) and the the SLAC4's just dont work in the computer period.

What do you think?

Hi TPeloose

The Boot Rom version has been updated using the Netkas updater and reads MP21.0007F.B06 and the SMC is 1.7f10. The Netkas updater was used to change '2.66GHz Unknown' to read '2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon'.

The SMC firmware revision gives that very message quoted in your lost post.

Thinking back, which is hard foir us old fellas, there were two Mac Pro 1.1 Rom Versions and one of them would not take the update. Have a look at this thread for the difference:-

Yeah, you must have not of had the Boot Rom I do. Because the netkas updater fails to update my mac. After holding in the power button and waiting for tone, It pops up the apple logo screen and immediately restarts.

I've been reading around and it appears that this boot rom version might be a new version than the ones listed above because they might have been put on refurb machines.

Wow I got the SLAC4 working.

I had to use the netkas updater. But I had to use one that was modified by a user on the netkas forum where he was able to edit a couple lines in the updater so it wouldn't reject the Boot Rom Version I have. The updater updated my Mac Pro to 2,1.

Installed the SLAEG and they didn't work. I suspect those are actually bad. Took them out and installed the SLAC4's.

It booted. Everything reads right and all is good.

Geek bench scores went from 6100 to 10,400.

Temp went up 5 degrees.
