For others searching with Command-f, the symbol in question is: ×
I don't think there is a way to input using a mac keyboard unfortunatly.

Option + 8
Following up on Rod Fryer's response, my OS is currently 10.11.5 (El Capitan) and I think Apple has dumbed down the label "Character Palette" to which he refers and now calls it "Emoji & Symbols". In Keyboard Preferences, check off "Keyboard, Emoji, & Symbol Viewers in menu bar".
When using Windows one holds the ALT key down and types a three or four digit ASCII code. There is a whole slew of frequently used symbols (multiplication symbol, plus or minus, various accented letters, one-half, registered trademark, copyright, etc. that I've committed to memory. This is also possible with the Mac by setting the keyboard to Unicode Hex (through Preferences>Keyboard>Input Sources>Language>Others), but one has to know the Unicode hex ASCII code, and I'm not there yet.
Just press option-shift-9 for a dot multiplication symbol.
