rastertoescpll failed

I am posting this under the generic title, because there are just so many people apparently having this problem, and they use a subject which is specific to their printer model, so the big picture gets lost.

This is a problem affecting a whole range of Epson printers, not just one, or two.

Lets start by saying that the common advice of "delete and re-add" is NOT a fix.
Please don't clutter up this thread with that worthless "advice".

Deleting the EPSON driver directory is probably not a fix either, unless you have an old printer installation and recently added a new printer or did a software upgrade of your printer drivers. In that case, thie may help.

BTW, there is a new set (February 2011) set of Epson drivers available on the Apple support site.
For me, this partially fixes some problems.

Where I am currently is that after installing this (huge) driver update from Apple, I can get my Epson 1280 to print if I connect it directly to my Macbook Pro.

This is significant progress.

However, when I re-attach the same printer to my Windows XP desktop system, and add the remote printer (remember, this is the same printer, just accessed via smb rather than directly), I get the infamous "rastertoescpll failed" issue.

Seeing so many hits on Google for this problem, it is clear that there is a serious stability issue in this component.

Finger pointing between Epson and Apple doesn't help.
We are customers of both companies, and those two companies need to collaborate on fixing this issue which is doing continuing damage to the reputation of both.

I'm having similar problems. Downloading the Apple/EpsonPrinterDrivers2.6 file right now. Why that doesn't seem to also be on Epson's site, I don't know. Have you had any more luck fixing your problems in the past 3 days? I am getting this error:

/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Filter/rastertoescp.app/Contents/MacOS/ras tertoescp failed

I can't print anything on our Epson Stylus 4880

I, too, am having this problem with my Epson R2880. Initially the issue started which changing over from photo black to matte black ink tanks and vice versa. [Always a problem on the 2880]. However on the recommendation from an epson engineer[?] i updated the printer driver and lo and behold the good old rasteroescpll problem appeared. My printer has not worked since.

I have reinstalled the driver from the Epson site but the problem continues. I guess that it must be an issue with Mac X v10.6.6?

I agree with Philip that this problem should be resolved by both manufacturers and not by customers stumbling in the dark!!

I am having this exact same issue, and it is driving me crazy. Please let me know if anyone has managed to solve the issue. My Epson T11 is connected via another Windows XP desktop (remote printer, via smb).

I have tried downloading the latest drivers from apple....removed the printer, re-installed it at least 10 times. Still no lucky.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ditto. It would seem that 10.6.8 has caused my problems and I've deleted & readded the printer 20 times or so. I've control-clicked on the printer queue and reset the printing system. I've created a new account & tried printing from it. I've downloaded the printer via Software Update three times. Nothing works.

You are correct that there is a set of Epson drivers dated February 2011 that is still available for download from Apple. This is version 2.6 of the Epson drivers. There is a more recent version (2.7) of the Epson drivers that was released on June 22, 2011. This was shortly before the release of OS X 10.6.8 update.

Some users have been installing the Epson 2.7 drivers along with the 10.6.8 update and are having problems with their printers not working any more. In many cases, this can be fixed by deleting the /Library/Printers/Epson folder, the /Library/Caches/Epson folder, and their printer from the Print & Fax preference pane. Then downloading and installing the earlier v2.6 Epson drivers restores printing for them.

However, when I re-attach the same printer to my Windows XP desktop system, and add the remote printer (remember, this is the same printer, just accessed via smb rather than directly), I get the infamous "rastertoescpll failed" issue.

Have you even been able to print to a Windows machine using the Epson drivers? I don't think that is possible. Most manufacturers still make their drivers so that they only work when connected to a Mac directly using USB. I believe this is what you are experiencing. If I am incorrect in my assessment of the Epson drivers not working over a network, I would be happy to be corrected.

To use Epson printers on a network you generally have to use the Gutenprint drivers, Many, but not all, Epson printers are supported by the Gutenprint drivers. You can see a list of the supported printers at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php . You can download the latest version of the Gutenprint drivers from http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php .

Thanks for the reply Matt. That all sounds good. However, the download is 845MB which is a sizable chunk of my monthly data allowance. I downloaded it but it didn't help.

So I downloaded Gutenprint and the RX650 isn't supported.

So I tried various other drivers which looked similar (PX650, TX650). The PX650 driver just fed all the paper out of the printer - interesting but not much use!

I found my original Epson software disk so, as before I deleted the library/printers/epson folder, the library/cache/epson folder and reset the printing system. The OS then said that the software wasn't complete and I should run Software Update again. I tried printing but the OS wouldn't allow it.

So I downloaded the 2.8 drivers. Same error as always (rastertoescpll).

Since this sounds like an Epson problem, I;m disappointed there doesn't seem to be any reference on their website.

The upshot is, Matt I'm very appreciative of your help and advice but I'm going nowhere. When's Lion coming out? 😉

Hi,

The problem is with the latest EPSON Printer Software Update 2.7. I installed the update on 6th July and since then I've been unable to print to my EPSON RX640. Fortunately I've been backing up with Timemachine and was able to restore my /Library/Printers/EPSON directory to the state prior to update 2.7 and my printer is working OK now.

How can we let Apple know that there is a problem with EPSON Printer Software Update 2.7.

Mac OS X 10.6.8

MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo

The Epson RX650 will be included in the next release of the Gutenprint drivers. In the meantime, you can use Gutenprint drivers for the Epson RX640. They will work.

Matt, thank you so much - I can finally print to my RX650! I am so happy to have been given such concise and helpful advice. THIS is what the internet was made for, not silly facebook ramblings 😉

Regards,

Simon.

I was unable to print from my RX650, but the above steps have got printing working for me again. Simply deleting the printer and installing the 2.6 drivers did not work, but doing those steps in conjunction with deleting the above mentioned files from the Library did fix the problem. Thank you.

I called Apple after my system (MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion - OX 10.8.4) started giving me a "rastertoescpll failed" message when trying to print through my Epson Artison 814. They asked if my MacBook had a name. Not knowing, she talked me through looking to see (opening "System Preferences", then opened the "Sharing" folder), and sure enough it had no name. I hadn't named it (for whatever reason), so I gave it a name, & now my printer works through my system again.

I don't no if this helps everyone, but at least some of you might get results from this.

I also stressed with them how many others seem to be having difficulty. I don't know if that will make a difference, but we'll see.

Good luck all, & thank you Phillip for starting this thread.
