Getting MacBook to appear on my TV?

Hi

I have a macbook 10.5.8 and am trying to get the screen to play on my TV so I can screen video onto my big TV. I went to the shop and they told me to buy Aa HDMI Plug to go in the back of my TV and a HDMI mini adaper, I have plugged it into the TV and into the slot on my mac (although it does not seem obvious the hole it goes in but found one I think it fits in) then put my TV onto the HD channel but it says there is no input.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Helen

Sounds a bit hit and miss don't you think Helen? I think it would be a good idea if you took your laptop and the adapter you purchased back to the shop so they can have a better look and advise you accordingly. Who knows they may have equipment in the shop on which they can test it on and thereby show you how to set things up? Seems like the sensible thing to do?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

As you didn't give us the MacBook x,x model number as it appears in the System Profiler, check that first. That will tell us if you got the right HDMI adapter.

1. Open System Profiler from Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info.

2. MacBook 5,1 MacBook 6,1 and 7,1 support mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapters.
3. MacBook 5,2, MacBook 4,x (x can be any number) and earlier support mini-DVI to HDMI adapter.

Note, if you have a Pro or Air MacBook, those adapters are different and you need to specify that you have either. Check what it actually says below the screen.

Hey a brody,
I have a MacBookPro4,1. From your post I'm lead to believe that I need a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter to connect my Mac to my TV. I've looked up several of these on line and from the picture it doesn't seem like it will fit in any port on my Mac. Can you tell me where on my Mac a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter goes?
Also, would that give me sound through the TV speakers?
Thanks,
Mike
