MBP 17 2011, Mac OS X (10.6.6)
rumor has it that the new 10.6.8 update (still beta) fix SATA3 issues related with 2011 MacBook Pros.
Can anybody confirm it?
OK guys...I think I may have stumbled onto something...
Rather than give a full explanation, anyone experiencing problems PLEASE try this to help narrow down the issue, I have done this and seen results!
You must have a SATA III DRIVE (OBVIOUSLY) and an airport extreme to replicate my findings.
1)Benchmark your 6g drive with just the magsafe power adapter attatched (nothing else)
2)screen capture the results
3)plug in an ethernet cable from your airport extreme that is on!
4)re-benchmark the results
listen...I know it sounds crazy but the southbridge controls this stuff....I have benchmarked an OWC 6g 120 GB drive without the ethernet cable plugged in and gotten like 440-450 MB/SEC write speeds (read speeds were fine)
WITH IT PLUGGED IN I GOT 480-510 MB/SEC!!! NOT KIDDING GUYS!!!!!!
PLEASE JUST TRY IT....YOUVE GOT NOTHING TO LOSE....BUT IF IT HAPPENS TO YOU AS WELL...WE MIGHT BE ONTO SOMETHING!
PS...JUST PLUGGING IN AN ETHERNET CABLE ATTACHED TO NOTHING DIDNT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCES....IT HAD TO BE CONNECTED TO MY AIRPORT EXTREME ON ONE END AND MY MACBOOK PRO ON THE OTHER
I wish I could try it. 😟
Half of us can't even get the OS instaled dude. 😝
I have loved apple products but the warranty policy and the limitations for the users is inacceptable.
I have purchased a new 2011 macbook pro i7 with 2.3 Cpu BTO
options 16Gb ram (OWC) and 1x Vertex3 240gb Rev 2.02
No one problems... but the choice to make the Optibay sata port
only 3Gbs is inacceptable ( the new revision from weeks 23 have Sata 6Gb/S CAPABLE on BOTH sata ports)... for a machine that costs 2750 dollars is inacceptable... for a machine that have a FULL INTEL
SPECIFICATIONS AND CHIPSETS is inacceptable.. and my experience with apple ends with this 2011 macbook pro.
Why precisely is that (sic) "inacceptable"? You knew (or have no one to blame but yourself if you did not) what you were purchasing before you purchased it.
Not bothering to respond to the rest of your post as it's incoherent/irrelevant.
How did you get your SATA port to force a 3gbs connection. I would actually be content with that if my SSD would work untill things got fixed. Even at SATA II speeds modern SSD's are WAY faster then the default drive MAC gives you.
@crosson: He's referring to the SATA port used by the super drive (which you can remove and replace with a hard drive if you purchase http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/ ).
Is he talking about the SATA port on the mainboard? Or the superdrive itself. I don't think either of hte mainboard ports are forced at 3gbs(if there were the case my SSD would have worked in the optibay). I just think it's obvious that SATA 3 isn't ready yet on the latest MBP's, Which is fine. I'll jsut wait untill they are.
Amazon.com has an amazing return polciy. They're taking my SSD back at full price. I'll just buy a new one in 6 months when all of this blows over.
He's referring to the SATA port on the motherboard that is used for the superdrive. It's known to be 3gbs only port.
Seconded on the amazon - I got burned because I bought my 510 from newegg (and they do not accept returns for a refund on SSDs - only replacements of the exact item) . I bought the Samsung P256 from amazon [1] and it's working perfectly.
So the SATA port on the mainboard which connects to the superdrive is a sata2 connection. It was my understanding that the problem with most of the SSD's was that there was a SATA III issue. This isn't the case if that sata port is SATA II internally on that channel.
So that puts me back at square one. Why wouldn't my C300 128GB work in that port? It works fine in every other machien accept this brand new 13" MBP. Im fine with things running at 3gbs, it's still WAY faster then a regular HDD. In my case I couldn't even load the OS, the installer would fail at loading essentials.pkg. The same installation however works fine when writing to a ceramic HDD.
WHat are your thoughts on this?
I just looked up your SSD. IT's a SATA II bus (3gbs). The problems we have here are with SATA III SSD's, and even possible SATA III HDD's in general.
Is it possible that a SATA III SSD would work fine if it were placed in the place of the regular HDD, rather then in the place of the optical drive?
@crosson: Yes, I bought the SATA II drive because the SATA III one exhibited these problems.
I am unaware of problems an SATA III drive in the optibay. I have replaced the main hard drive first with the SATAIII drive, then with the SATAII drive.
Ahh I see. See I want a SATA3 SSD not for the sata III bus but because many of those SSD's have improved features which improve the length of life in the SSD. I would be fine with forcing the port to SATA 2 if only the latest SSD's would then work. That sadly does not appear to be the case
Is inacceptable why:
The first ( Early 2011) Macbook pro's hae 1 Sata3 (6Gb) for HDD and 1 Sata2 (3gb/S) for Optical unit.
The second ( early 2011 ) Macbook pro's ( produced on mid March ). have 2 SATA3 ( 6GB/S) .
My dollars in febrary is the same dollars in march... but the macbooks... no...
If you don't want to replay on my posts ... no one costrict you... but please ( silent ).
Danilo.
I think you are wrong.
I have a week 14 (April) mbp cto 2.3 15" and I have SATA2 on the optibay.
I have an m4 installed on the optibay and its working perfectly (because it is SATA2) as soon as I try it on the main SATA3 port I get the hanging issues.
