does iphone 4 charge when it is turned off?

hello to every1.
just got a new iphone 4 and the retailer told me to charge it for about 6 hours for the first time.
the thing is,i plug the charger in and the phone turns on and starts charging.
when i turn the phone off there is no indication that the phone is charging,the screen is completely black.Does it charge or not?

My iPhone 4 does. Forgot to plug it in and drained it until it shut down. I plugged it in and turned it back off. When I turned it on a few hours later, it was almost fully charged. And to answer the second question, no problems leaving it on while charging, that is my normal action. Plug it in on my night stand over night.

Yes your phone will charge if connected to the charger, even if the phone is turned off. I do it all the time. There are times, I just want to charge my phone, but not be reachable. So, if you plug the charger in and your phone turns on, feel free to turn it fully off and it will still charge.
