Sony HDR-TD10 and MVC Formatting

Is anyone here familiar with the new Sony MVC / 3D format? I am unable to find anything specific in the discussions or via an Internet search. It is my understanding that the new Sony HDR-TD10 records in this format, and the software
(PMB / 3D) is not supported in Mac OS X. I am aware of the formats as they apply to 2D, but not 3D, to avoid any confusion.

Does anyone know if the 3D footage can even be downloaded and stored (not edited) via Final Cut Pro for possible future editing when a conversion or editing solution becomes available?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I have seen the Dashwood site, but I could find no specific information about the Sony MVC formatting or importing MVC into FCP. I *think* the MVC formatting is so new, there are no real answers at this time, even from Sony, who says the camera is for *fun*! (A lot of fun for $1,500...lol

I also *believe* the MVC 3D format cannot be broken down into separate data streams for individual editing.

We just imported some Sony HDR-TD10 footage into FCP on Friday. The MVC format interleaves the left and right eye on alternate lines of each field. Our Post Engineer said there is a FCP plug-in that separates the Left and Right Eye into separate files. He wrote something that did it outside of FCP. There is European software for MAC that allows you to view the unripped files in a variety of 3D types. Google Weller ps 3D.

The footage from this camera look really good for a $1500 "consumer camera". I don't think the footage from the $22,000 Panasonic 3D camera looks that much better.

I have MVC files from my JVC Everio 3D camcorder and tried using the peter-wimmer software described above in Windows XP on my mac under VMWare Fusion and it could not decode the MVC files. I have also seen comments on line that Sony Vegas 10D does not work with my JVC, but does work with the Sony camcorder TD10 that also produces MVC files by the "same" standard. I am looking for a mac solution.

In the meantime, you can import into iMovie, iPhoto, or Aperture and you see a nice 1080i 2D movie. These programs don't see the second channel of information.

Frustrating

OK, I found a converter (made for Mac) that will convert the AVCHD MTS files to MPEGS. It ONLY transfers the files as 2D. This is a start. http://www.tanbee.com/video-converter

It's my understanding there are multiple software companies working quickly (via other discussion groups), to create a simple 3D converter / editor. Much like the Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. I do not believe the Vegas software will work 100% trouble free with a Mac Intel processor, or so I have read in other discussions.

So if we can keep this thread open, please post when anyone finds new software for Mac.

Thanks:

OK, glad to hear you have found a solution.

I am seeking a consumer converter as noted above, similar to the Vegas software ($95.00).

I only need to import (in 3D) edit (crop) the length of 3D clips and be able to view / save them. I am not seeking complex studio grade editing systems. I think most Mac users are seeking the same.

Yea, it looks like there will be 3-4 Mac compatiable software programs available in the near future. I guess it comes down to price, stability and ease of operation. From reading other discussion groups, there are many **newbie** shooters who have just gotten into video because of 3D, so anything too complicated or expensive will not likley work for them.

Does anyone have a workflow to extract the two clips from the TD-10 without requiring Windows?

Especially without the PMB Software - as it seems it is the only way to see or generate the ssif files for now. I would like to start using FCP X with the Dashwood plug-in - and I don't want to use Windows to

1. get the 3D clips off the camera with PMB

2. convert them to 2 clips Peter Wimmer's tool

3. convert the 2 avi clips to something readable by FCP X

this is simply too complicated as a workflow - and I don't want to stick with Sony Vegas Pro, which is the most unstable of video-editing software I have ever seen.

If someone has a workflow that only requires a Mac, please share!

Thx,

CJ
