Q: new macbook pro 2011 weak and dropping wireless connection

Just looked throught this part of the forum and found out there are a lot of people out there which seem to have the same problem as me.

I purchased a new modell 2011 MBP on the very first day from our apple store.
At home, sitting directly beside the wireless router I didn´t noticed anything wrong.
I have got beside of the Mac OS a bootcamp Prt. with Windows 7 on it and everythign works fine so far.

Five days after purchased I started traveling on business and at present we are for some weeks in Melbourne. Were having a wireless connection in our appartement and here I have got massiv problems with my connection.

We are having altogether four windows mashines with us, my IPad, my Iphone, another HTC smartphone, and my new Macbook.

All the other devices connecting to our room wireless without problems. The net strengh is not fantastic but the other devices bringing it up to four bars on the windows wireless symbol in the task bar. None of the other computers where ever loosing the connection.

Only my macbook can not make it over three bars and its going on and off. Donwloads fail freuquently because the conection is interrupted more than one times..
In my opinion this problem is even worse on the Windows OS and a bit better but far away from beeing good and acpetable on the Mac Os.
I hope its only a driver issue and there is no hardware problem with the new mashine. Other than this I love the new notebook and I am very satisfied with its performance.

Iphone 4, Ipad 1 ,Macbook pro 13, I 5, 8GB, early 2011, Windows 7, Mac OS

With all due respect Mike, I doubt the issue is router related for a lot of people.

    For my particular issue...
Firstly, it's fully up to date in terms of firmware (checked at the weekend in fact).
Secondly, its power is cycled at least once a week (I've actually done it a few times since getting the new Macbook).
Thirdly, I have a 2008 Macbook sitting next to the new one getting a perfect signal with no dropouts. I also have a PS3, 2 iPhones & a TV all connected perfectly to the same network with no issues.

I'ma running iStumbler on both Macbooks and can see that the new one receives a much lower signal quality than the old one.
I've monitored the channels which are used in my area, as well as the signal to noise ratio to pick the best one.

So in my case at least, this is definitely not related to my router.

There may of course be some people who are suffering worse symptoms because of some setting(s) on their router, so a reboot may trigger their router to re-scan the free channels and pick another one.

Thank You MilesR for the way you started you answer, with respect, you don't hardly get that anymore. Thank You.

Anyway I just threw this out to ANYONE that *MIGHT NOT* have tried a hard re-boot on their router. I know I didn't. I always leave it on plugged in and we seldom have a power outage where I live.

I've had the same experiences as you even, where I had a Windows machine sitting right next to my New Mac, router Six feet away and Windows machine would hold Signal ALL DAY LONG and not flicker. But the Mac would drop after 5 mins. and pick signal right back up within a few seconds but would drop again 15 mins. later. It drove me (crazy) to being Very upset with Apple and AT&T because they were telling me it was the other one's fault. None of them fixed it, it just happened as I said. That's my two cents on the subject. lol.

Can we give the tired +it's your router+ reply a rest, please.

Have the decency to read the thread before you trot that one out.

I've replaced my router, once with a LinkSys, second with a NetGear. At work, I have the same problem (Cisco wireless AP). When I go to coffee shops, the problem is the same.

All of them need to replace their router? I think not.

And my 2006 MBP works fine in ALL of those environments, as does my iPhone 4.

The problem IS the new MacBook Pro (drivers, or hardware, I don't know).

That's great that it worked for you. But your reply adds nothing to the conversation. Works for you? good for you, however all the people who have already tried what you suggest (and said so in this thread), gain nothing from a post with no new information.

Do you have a 2011 MBP? No? Then NOT RELEVANT.

So kindly refrain and leave this to people who are actually having a problem.

I agree with bitserf. I can bluetooth tether my MBP to my Verizon Blackberry and have NEVER had a connection issue. There is no doubt in my mind that this is likely a firmware issue. - AB

Apple hurry up and fix this! It's so irritating when you spend so much money to have a fast system and it's let down by not being able to do the most common thing for a modern computer - connect quickly to the internet through wireless.

Come on apple, feeling a bit let down here.

...just spent 3 hours tweaking a brand new router thinking my MBP (3wks old) wasn't the culprit. How the **** did I miss this thread?!

Obviously exhibiting the same issues, inconsistent ping times with any AP I associate with. C'mon Apple... This is unheard of behavior from your brand, please produce a fix! ._.

Those with this issue (in particular ping) and Win7 installed on boot camp, reboot into it and try the ping test again.

My pings in Win7 are fine (2ms-3ms) and in OSX they are 80-90ms constant with the occasional drop out. I am sitting next to my router.

Here's to hoping for a patch soon.

This is my experience to this issue.

    On 10.6.6
I bought the new MBP about 3 weeks ago and during setup I was not able to connect to the router at first (MBP cannot detect my router). As this is my first apple system, I thought that the problem was with my really old router. Then the system decide to detect my router after awhile but the connection was not stable and it will drop from the network. But dropping from the network is not the worst thing to happen. I encountered two serious issues when downloading large files. I have a slow broadband connection therefore it usually takes hours to complete download. The first issue was the program completed download but was corrupted without notification. I only knew when I try to install the program. The second issue should be the same as the first because the download breaks and I have to restart download again (wasted a full day total). Ping the router and encountered really high ping time and a few packets timeout. Decided to buy a new router but encountered same problem. Then I found this thread after searching apple support.

    after update to 10.6.7
So far have not encountered corrupted file during download but ping time is still higher than other system and occasional packet timeout. Network disconnection still happen after the system into power saving.

It seems the new MBP has higher ping time and more timeout than other system.

This is becoming infuriating. I can no longer simply browse the internet in my room or steam programs without a small hiccup turning into a ten minute battle with Air Port and the eventual resignation that I'll have to go downstairs and sit around for a few minutes waiting for the wireless to start working again. Think I'm going to go into the Apple store next week when I'm back home and rant at them until my MBP is either replaced or they fix the issue. Loud enough so everyone can hear me.

Well, Gren1e, not sure that a replacement will help. A number of us on this board have had replacements with no discernible change. Very frustrating to have sold my 2009 machine at this point, as I am having issues downloading large files overnight with the 2011 model. (my second machine, they replaced the first one).

This issue makes bootcamp more useful. it's really a great move, Apple.

Yeah I'm sure it won't help either, and I don't intend to go into an Apple store and loudly aggravate people working there because that's not how I go about things, I was just angry at the time of posting. What puzzles me is this; if people are getting replacements and are still having the problem, surely this bug is on all new MBPs, yet this forum is the only place on the web its been noted.

In bootcamp the ping time was normal and no timeout but we did not buy apple system to just work in windows.

Any, this should tells us that the hardware and firmware is not the issue but the issue is with drivers provided by apple. Can only hope that apple sees this as an issue and rectify the problem quickly.

Just spoke to Apple in regards to receiving the New Replacement MB and still having issues with wireless.
The last one was replaced due to a suspected faulty card. The new MB has exactly the same problem with connection. Looks like I get some more time to think about whether I keep it, hope for a fix soon or get my 2.5k back. I did however email the lady the link to this thread and asked her to forward it on to the techs, she said that she did and sounded to be very honest about it.
Anyway all the best you lot. I'm outta here...
