Q: new macbook pro 2011 weak and dropping wireless connection

Just looked throught this part of the forum and found out there are a lot of people out there which seem to have the same problem as me.

I purchased a new modell 2011 MBP on the very first day from our apple store.
At home, sitting directly beside the wireless router I didn´t noticed anything wrong.
I have got beside of the Mac OS a bootcamp Prt. with Windows 7 on it and everythign works fine so far.

Five days after purchased I started traveling on business and at present we are for some weeks in Melbourne. Were having a wireless connection in our appartement and here I have got massiv problems with my connection.

We are having altogether four windows mashines with us, my IPad, my Iphone, another HTC smartphone, and my new Macbook.

All the other devices connecting to our room wireless without problems. The net strengh is not fantastic but the other devices bringing it up to four bars on the windows wireless symbol in the task bar. None of the other computers where ever loosing the connection.

Only my macbook can not make it over three bars and its going on and off. Donwloads fail freuquently because the conection is interrupted more than one times..
In my opinion this problem is even worse on the Windows OS and a bit better but far away from beeing good and acpetable on the Mac Os.
I hope its only a driver issue and there is no hardware problem with the new mashine. Other than this I love the new notebook and I am very satisfied with its performance.

Iphone 4, Ipad 1 ,Macbook pro 13, I 5, 8GB, early 2011, Windows 7, Mac OS

When idle, ping times are around 6ms, better than before the update.

If I transfer a file from another computer via wifi, it starts losing packets.

    The dropouts still occur.

So, a bit better, but same as before essentially.

The issue is not fixed try pinging and transfer a large file. I was doing it while loged in via logmein and the screen froze until transfer finished. Still sad :(

Installed both updates, shutdown the machine, started it up and still have issues.

Ping times are now ~4ms, not the <1ms that I get in Windows 7 x64 Boot Camp, but ok.

However, Remote Desktop Connection still lags quite badly unless I have a video stream running in the background.

Note, that I have no network lag when running in Windows.

Apple has not even acknowledged any wireless problem in the updates.

Most likely they haven't fixed the issue as otherwise they would mention it.

As a new Mac user I am not impressed.

I can confirm the two updates have done nothing to improve wifi networking. My girlfriend has the new 2011 MBP, and the problems persist even after we installed both updates yesterday.

We're patiently waiting for an actual fix.

    @bitserf

Yes. I am still monitoring ts thread...of course....nothing else to do as my MacBook is still with apple ;-)  nearly three weeks today.

On wedensday I had anothernall from the apple store where I bought my MacBook. The guy thenhad a phone all from the technician in the apple workshop who's workingnat my MacBook.

They swapping the logic board now...knowing that it will not help the problem!!!!!!!! They clearly said, there is NO solution at present.

The notebook is supposed to come back to the shop today and than it's on me to make my mind up, staying with it or giving it back!!!!!!!!!

I have to say it's a difficult decision. If Apple  had confirmed a problem, then I would be safe as than I could rely on them offering ansolution one way or the other. A software Update, A new Firmware or even a reacall and hardware exchange.

BUT as there is no official statement I am fearing they will secretly fix the problem on the next production line and leave us with the first build models behind!!!!!

As you can see here in the tread. THERE IS NO SOLUTION SO FAR!

None of the hopes became true so far, nothing helped, and nobody ever got affixed Mashine back from Apple.

I have been around looking at different Notebooks the last days, but as I need my Mashine for my Photo Work I was not impressed by any other model concerning the screen quality.

Yesterday I found a nice vaio Modell at the Sony website, to be configured to exactly the way I would wish it, but when I saw the model in the shop later I was so frustrated about hardware quality and screen that I started doubting again...

I really don't know what to do!!!!! I am frightened of the moment I get a phone call from my apple store that my notebook is back and I have to make a decision!!!!!

Once again, adding my name to the list of people whos update didn't help them. Still very weak connection, often drop outs and slow download speeds. Sigh.

I'm very pleased for you Lara

Mine has been behaving very well since the latest updates. Ping times are back to normal and connection rates have been pretty good.

However, I also recently got a new router (due to a change of broadband type/provider) - and I bought a dual-band router (2.4Ghz & 5Ghz). I'm connecting the Macbook to the router via the 5Ghz band (as they were doing in the Apple stores) and get connection speeds of 216Mbps according to both the router & the Macbook. So whether this also helps I don't know, but it's all working pretty well for me!

Glad I found this thread.  Thought I was going crazy.  I am on my 3rd MBP 15" 2011 model for various defects and have noticed that WiFi works fine with my Airport but when I use my campus WiFi, it drops out and the only way to resestablish connection is to turn airport on and off again.  My old MBP had zero problems with this WiFi network so it is a defect of the current MBP.  I did yesterday's firmware updates and the problem is still there.  Frustrated beyond belief to the point where I am cautious recommending Apple products.

Probably they just updated the firmware This update is really makes ping much more stable, but doesn't fix weak connection speed (in my case at least). At the same place (where RSSI about 70) MBP 2010 shows transfer rate 5-10 times faster than MBP 2011.

ML, how difference is speedtest.net result from your 2011/2010 MBP?  My 2011 MBP is wirelessly hitting the same speed as my PC with ethernet cable connected.  The only thing I concern now is drop out issue resloved or not with recent update, so far, so good.

The issue is not fix, plain and simple. The ping latance might be a bit down, but card has thruput issues
