buying used ipad

I am going to buy a used iPad 3G from my son's friend. What should he do before handing it over and what should I do upon receiving it? How should I check it out to make sure it's in perfect working order?

I've done a search, but haven't found answers in about 45 minutes of looking, so I"m throwing myself on the mercies of you wise folks.

Many thanks!

He should use iTunes to "restore as new." It's real easy and iTunes walks you through it.

Checking it out? I don't know. Connect to the Internet. Browse the web but don't be surprised that Flash is not supported. Download some free apps and confirm that they work. There really isn't much else.

Also, there is a one-year warranty that is transferable but I don't know the details regarding how to do it. Perhaps call Apple at 800-275-2273 and ask them.

In addition to being able to transfer the original Apple warranty, that would also include the Apple Care extended warranty if he bought it, but if he did not buy Apple Care and if the original warranty has not expired, you still have time to add the extended warranty to cover the iPad 1 for another two years.

I would also check that the moisture seals have not been activated. If they have, then it may have been exposed to a lot of moisture or gotten wet. At that point it is an Apple determination as to whether the warranty is still valid.

Actually, the iPad AppleCare extends the warranty to *two years total*, not two additional years, same as the iPods.
-> AppleCare - iPad
"With the AppleCare Protection Plan, you can extend your service coverage to two years from the iPad purchase date"
