Okay, then Apple Support Level 1, Level 2 and Customer Relations just misinformed me!
Any suggestions...?
if you can find and download the 4.1.1 file you can install it on the appletv using itunes. -

indeed it was, however it jumped straight from beta3 to release, there was no GM release in-between.
also the beta3 version did not have MLB or NBA, so i would assume that a lot of changes were made between beta3 and the released version that no-one outside apple was able to test. -

I am very disappointed they didn't fully test this update before they forced it out to us... They had to know there were a lot of us with this configuration.

Well, I actually wish I'd tried the beta as i cannot believe quite so many bugs have been introduced by this! -

the beta3 did not have these issues that i could see anyway.
if they had released a GM like they did for iphone/ipad most of the issues would have been caught before release. -

you'll have to google for the file.
once you have it you just install it via itunes like any other iDevice update.
control click on the update button and it will ask you to point to the file, it will then install it. -
Mar 11, 2011 11:16 AM in response to Chenksby BradGarbus,I am using it via a PC based network. The only time I see attached devices in iTunes is when I attach it directly to the PC. Can that be done with the Apple TV 2 ? -

I would bet money they figured this is the 'cheapest' product they sell, why bother...

connect the appletv to your PC using a USB cable.
then you do the necessary installation via itunes. -

Thank you! First bit of advice that has made any sense. -
Mar 11, 2011 11:23 AM in response to Chenksby thunderkeys,All iOS devices since the iPhone 3GS have signed firmwares, unless you do some preparatory work before the firmware stops being signed you cannot downgrade. -

4.1.1 is still signed and can be installed. -

The latest update had brought back different HDMI output modes we originally had on AppleTV 1 but without different resolution support. I suspect in changing the HDMI handling they have inadvertently caused the issues many are complaining about now.
Strictly Apple could say DVI is not supported, but it seems churlish of them to refuse to reinstate functionality the GPU was capable of handling, and annoying customers just to be pedantic.
Their cheapest non-peripheral product is probably an iPod Shuffle, but I suspect they sell more of those.

Fair enough! Have been quite hectic lately so never got round to trying the beta. Quite like the look of Lion mind you.

Mar 11, 2011 11:26 AM in response to Chenksby thunderkeys,Usually they close the signing window quickly, so if anyone wants to downgrade, now is the time. However, after downgrading I was automatically (with no intervention) re-upgraded.
