Q: 4.3 Flicker Problem

My ATV2 had been working great until I installed 4.3 today. Now every couple of second there is a very annoying flicker on the screen. I have a 1080i TV. Any suggestions? Any way to go back to 4.2?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

For those interested in that preparatory work I mentioned, google "Firmware Umbrella".

I do not have DVI, I haven't experienced this problem, and I haven't read this entire thread. As such, I probably am not the first one to point this out, but when I upgraded to 4.3 I noticed some new video output options in the Settings menu. Have those of you who are experiencing this problem tried toggling through all of the available modes?

Usually they close the signing window quickly, so if anyone wants to downgrade, now is the time. However, after downgrading I was automatically (with no intervention) re-upgraded.

And that is what the Apple Support said would happen and what I feared. I am going to start researching Jailbreak and other options. There has to be a way!

I can't speak for everyone else, but it won't allow me to change it. It just says AUTO and when I try to select it the screen blinks out and comes back after a few seconds with no other options. I even tried to restore with no success.
    Nothing works. Gerrrr.

are you connected via just HDMI? or are you using HDMI to DVI conversion?
if the latter then apple technically doesn't support that so that will be reason the HDMI settings give no options.

The first time it was not for me, but it seemed to me after downgrading I was automatically upgraded without intervention. Although it is possible the dog or the kids hit the remote key, I haven't done empirical testing on it.

I am doing HDMI to DVI, but again it did work before the update just fine for a very long time.

I think Apple will fix it at some point, just as they fixed the wavy screens that many HDMI->DVI users saw with 4.0/4.1. As much as I'd love it, the ATV2 is not enough justification for the cost to upgrade my two perfectly functioning pre-HDMI HDTVs.

EXACTLY... I have a very nice 55 inch Sony with two spare bulbs. I sank a lot of money into the TV and only $99 into the ATV. Apple should do the right thing.

i appreciate that it did work, but it is technically unsupported so when things go wrong you have to appreciate that it might not get fixed, and only supported methods continue to work normally.

I accept that answer, but I would have never chosen to do the update if I would have been aware of this issue. I think that is the point everyone is trying to make here. I didn't ask for the update, and wasn't given the option to uninstall it or refuse it. It just installed on my system. (We lost power, so when everything came back online it just started downloading. That may be why I was not prompted.) I read about the updates so I was expecting it, but never crossed my mind it would require me to replace my TV to use it.

That is the part many people aren't going to accept. Regardless of what Apples supports or doesn't. They really should support something they caused when the update was pushed out to me. Again, I would have not installed it in hind sight.

the response would be though that you knew it was unsupported when you bought the appletv, so you accepted the risks from the start.

it most likely will be fixed, but you do have to accept that whilst you continue to use it via unsupported connection methods that you may continue to have issues.

it's like buying a car and using tires that the manufacture say aren't supported. you know the risks when you choose to use those unsupported tires.
