Mar 15, 2011 9:06 AM in response to RamonOCby BradGarbus,FINALLYSOME NEWS...
Well, now I will have my Apple TV and my Roku. One could say, the best of both worlds.
I have to admit, I have been spoiled by AirPlay and have missed the feature ever since my system has been down. Like many users I have eliminated cable TV and all my "boxes" under my TV with exception of my Apple TV2. Everything else is streamed via home network. So, since all this has occurred I have been completely without use of my television and entertainment. (on a personal note, when you work 2 jobs and rely on watching your favorite show in the evenings, not having that hour of escape can be stressing.)
Thank you Apple for getting this information out there. Now, PLEASE work around the clock until the update is posted. Lets hope this works. -

Mar 15, 2011 8:51 PM in response to AppDadby maxcpu,Yepp, happening to me too. I'm using an HDMI to DVI cable, purchased at the advice of an Apple Store employee when I got my AppleTV. So you need a TV with an HDMI input, but not a 1080p. Kind of narrows thing down a bit, doesn't it.
Apple: You need a new TV, but hey, not too new. -
Mar 15, 2011 9:48 PM in response to AppDadby markbrand,Just downloaded the Apple 4.3 TV software and my HiDef SONY is useless!
APPLE must provide a a RESTORE to prior version. -
Mar 16, 2011 5:02 PM in response to BradGarbusby slstang,Sorry but according to an excellent (being sarcastic) first level apple support person (Gil), this is not the case...HDMI to DVI was never supported...and with this update it was brought "into" specification...thus no fix is coming. Hope he is wrong and misinformed.
Come on Apple...I thought you were a better engineering company than this. -

But that is not the problem for a lot of us. I have a direct HDMI connection and still get the flicker. -

Well, today I received my Roku and it does a lot more than the ATV2, but it has a "PC" feel to it. Not as clean and nice as the Apple interface, BUT unlike my ATV2 right now, it is actually working fine with my HDMI to DVI connection!
Still patiently waiting to see what Apple comes up with. Everyday I check to see if there is a new update for the software. Last time it took 2 weeks, that should put a "fix" near the end of next week.
I think we are all being more than patient... -

Please forgive me, I have not had a lot of luck with speaking to Apply employees lately. And from what has been posted here there is a lot of conflicting info out there. I have a hard time believing someone that doesn't even identify themselves as an Apple employee. This entire experience has left me jaded with Apple. I hope in time that can be changed, at one time I held Apple at the top of all tech companies. Now, I am taking a wait and see... Its just annoying.

Mar 18, 2011 6:58 AM in response to AppDadby Dan Merwin,The change in the firmware has caused my Panasonic 50" Plasma TV to stutter on playback or have no sound.
HDMI connected, 1080P TV.
This is unacceptable. -
Mar 18, 2011 8:47 AM in response to Dan Merwinby poodlehead@covad.net,Add me to the list of people whose screen flickers more than once per second after this 4.2 update (what is the 4.3 number on this thread name?).
The system has been working perfectly out of the box since I bought it on Jan 8, 2011. Impressive product, bought it and the necessary adapter cable from the local Apple Store. If Apple can't fix this, I either need to be able to return to the old software version or return the AppleTV [or have Apple buy me a new TV ]
I am viewing using:
Sony Widescreen Projection TV 51"
KP-51WS500
and am connected via Apple purchased:
AppleTV Part Number: MC572LL/A
Apple mini-DVI to Video Adapter Part Number: M9319G/A (goes to DVI-HDTV multi-pin input connector on back of TV) -
Mar 18, 2011 8:56 AM in response to poodlehead@covad.netby poodlehead@covad.net,Forgot to mention that I am unable to change the HDMI output setting, it is stuck at Auto...not sure if that is related or not -
Mar 18, 2011 10:17 AM in response to poodlehead@covad.netby poodlehead@covad.net,Correction, Apple sold me two connectors, and the one I listed was the one that didn't work. So here is the correction:
WAS: Apple mini-DVI to Video Adapter Part Number: M9319G/A (goes to DVI-HDTV multi-pin input connector on back of TV)
NOW: (Right off the Apple Store receipt) Belkin Part Number: TR842LL/A Return Date: Jan. 20,2011 For Support Visit: www.belkin.com/support/ -
Mar 18, 2011 10:19 AM in response to poodlehead@covad.netby poodlehead@covad.net,and the Belkin goes fro the HDMI connector on the AppleTV to the DVI-HDTV multi-pin input connector on back of TV) -
Mar 18, 2011 2:01 PM in response to poodlehead@covad.netby I2Lens,Add another to the list of same problem. I have an ATV2 in my basement home theatre, running the same build (4.2) as the new one I just bought for my family room. My basement config is direct HDMI cable between my ATV2, into a Pioneer V32 receiver and HDMI from the receive to an Epson LCD HiDef projector. All works fine.
My family room however, is ATV2 (4.2) connected via HDMI-DVI to a 720P Sony Grand Wega KT-60WE610. I have an optical cable going to a Marantz AV Receiver. IN this config, I experience the same issues as those described throughout this thread.
At first I thought it was an issue with a HDMI switch (I also have a PS3 connected) so I bought a new one, same problem. I then went direct (HDMI - DVI) but same result. The PS3 works flawlessly.
I did some research and there were some hits that older TV's that are not HDCP compliant will cause these issues. I did check the documentation for my TV and it clearly states that the DVI port is HDCP compliant, so I can't see that being the issue.
I hope Apple resolves the issue soon, or I will be bringing one of the units back for a refund. Too bad, because I really want the Airplay in both locations, depending on where I'm view/listening.
