To be blunt I think Apple will fix the issue to avoid the bad publicity and what ever people might stir up. I will leave it at that.
And no, there are laws that do exist, but I leave that to the lawyers to quote. I don't have the time to go searching for it. I work 2 jobs and this is not a concern. I just hate to see people being taken advantage of either intentionally or not.
I see. So in your mind, being "well versed in Consumer Protection law" does not mean actually knowing the law, and the best you can do is hint at some sort of proprietary company knowledge (which is a bit odd, since the law and court decisions are all matters of public record).
I think that you overestimate the "bad publicity" impact of the news that a few people with equipment that does not meet the box specifications for compatibility with AppleTV have found that the latest update is not compatible with their equipment, and have chosen to return their AppleTVs to Apple or revert to the previous version of the software.
However, as I noted previously, there have been reports of similar symptoms on TVs that do meet AppleTV's equipment compatibility specifications. Apple is undoubtedly working to solve that problem. So if those symptoms do not merely look similar, but actually have a similar cause, then perhaps when Apple fixes that problem it will fortuitously fix yours as well. -
Mar 19, 2011 3:06 PM in response to jimmer111by ericsteele47,Thanks. I swear that I did exactly that 20 times earlier on in the week. Looks like they've recertified 4.2.1. -
Mar 20, 2011 9:26 AM in response to jimmer111by RamonOC,Many thanks to Jimmer and the others on this thread. "About" display lists this as iOS 4.1.1. Works as before update! -
Mar 20, 2011 10:43 AM in response to AppDadby NYCAH,Flickering after the upgrade to 4.2. Apple TV 2 via APPLE'S OWN HDMI to DVI cable to Sony KE-32TS2U. Aggravating! Appreciate the work everyone has done to figure out that this is not fixable....maybe the next update? -

To recap the process to restore to an earlier version using a PC
That should do it! (And like poodlehead said...resist the impulse to agree to update, at least until a fix is available...and you're very welcome! But thanks also goes to several other posters who set us on the right path)
Thanks a lot jimmer111 and the others. This fixed the issue that the Apple support guy said was not possible to fix. -

Ours doesnt even flicker, its just not there. Our tv screen says "no video signal". It worked before the update and we've tried everything. Bought new cable, used diff hdmi ports, restored atv2, etc. It works on our older akai tv but we just got this tv...so annoyed.
Thank you -

Well thanks to jimmer111 we now have a fix/workaround that has resolved this for many of us. So this is all a NULL point.
*My sincerest thanks to jimmer111 for being one of the few on this forum that actually posted useful data!* -
Mar 21, 2011 3:57 AM in response to BradGarbusby drsnacks,Don't go that far, I'd still like to use the advertised capabilities of my new iPad and stream video from third-party apps via AirPlay and maybe enjoy 5.1 surround from Nextflix. The problem is still mainly about resolution, as long as it downgrades to 480p despite a 720p capable setup it's broken, wether it flickers or not. It's nice though that we don't have to have bricked units until the fix, and it's easier to get 720p to stick in atv 4.1 through cord yanking tricks. -
Mar 21, 2011 8:40 AM in response to drsnacksby CaptainTrips,Me too! I want the latest so I can stream videos I took from my iPhone or from 3rd party apps. Fortunately there may be news around the corner for those of us with useless ATV2 units. BGR is now reporting that a new iOS4.3.1 release may just be 1 to 2 weeks away from release. So good possibility that this includes 4.2.1 ATV2 firmware update as 4.2 was released same time as iOS4.3. -
Mar 21, 2011 9:01 AM in response to Chenksby Daniel Raymont,I am having the same issue. Exchanged my Apple TV and the HDMI cable but am still having the same problem. -
Mar 21, 2011 12:45 PM in response to RamonOCby AppDad,Regarding recovering back to the old firmware, exactly what kind of USB cable do I need. I thought I had a micro USB cable that I use to connect my wife's digital camera to my Mac but the connector doesn't fit the ATV. I looked at what they had at Best Buy and they had a "mini" USB cable but I wasn't sure that was what I needed since the post that gave the steps said micro cable. -
Mar 21, 2011 12:53 PM in response to AppDadby tgibbs,Mini and micro USB are different. Micro USB is most commonly used with cell phones and with the Amazon Kindle. Micro USB cables and adapters are available cheaply through a number of vendors, including Amazon.
