Mar 9, 2011 5:28 PM in response to AppDadby kag49601,I am also having issues with this flickering now that I have updated to 4.2. I have an older sony 1080i TV. The Apple TV displays that my resolution displayed is 480p, but that is nothing new. It originally had a similar issue when I first purchased it, but after the first software update the issue was resolved.
I contacted Apple Tech Support tonight, and they sent it up to engineering. The tech I spoke with had not heard of the problem yet, but after reading this thread, I am surprised by that.... Hopefully we will all get another update to this so we can use our apple tv 2's with our older TV's once again. -
Mar 9, 2011 5:38 PM in response to newagemacby slstang,No can do. The HDMI output setting will not change no matter how many times I push it. It is stuck on Auto. Also the restore didn't work. Called back apple support and got a voicemail. Guess no apple tv for me tonight. -
Mar 9, 2011 5:47 PM in response to AppDadby Thomas Hill1,I am also unable to change the HDMI outlet setting. -
Mar 9, 2011 5:50 PM in response to AppDadby WassabiMac,When I select HDMI settings, the screen blinks and goes back to settings. The HDMI is set to Auto and you can't change it. This flickering seems to be happening to anyone that is using HDMI to DVI and the HDMI setting can't make up it's mind on what resolution to send out. -
Mar 9, 2011 5:55 PM in response to AppDadby James DeRosa,Same problem with HDMI->DVI adapter on Sony 65" Projection. -
Mar 9, 2011 5:58 PM in response to CaptainTripsby Jim2,Mine is a 7+ year old 51" Hitachi Model 51S500 rear-projection television. I use a HDMI to DVI adapter. I have never gotten above 480p with this Apple TV, but until this update the signal was clear and steady. Now I am getting this annoying little flickering. Now I wish I had not updated the unit so soon, until they worked the bugs out of it. -

Apple TVI have to say many of these flicker issues seem to relate to either DVI connections or 1080i TV sets, neither of which are supported as far as I know. -
Mar 9, 2011 6:02 PM in response to Winston Churchillby AppDad,Is anyone having the problem that isn't using a 1080i? Mine is. But it worked fine this morning before I updated. I can change the HDMI settings but nothing helps. -
Mar 9, 2011 6:07 PM in response to AppDadby Winston Churchill,It may not help, but have you tried pulling all the cables (including the HDMI cable) and restarting everything after 30 seconds. -
Mar 9, 2011 6:12 PM in response to Winston Churchillby WassabiMac,I read an older thread that talked about this same problem on an older software release which got resolved with a software update. The problem involved HDMI to dvi cable/adapter. That's why I decided to go ahead and try it, and it worked fine until the latest update! I didn't read any fine print that said you can't use hmdi adapters on the outside of the tiny apple box. It just says HDMI output! But I'm sure somewhere in small writing we will find HDMI to dvi not supported! -
Mar 9, 2011 6:17 PM in response to AppDadby drsnacks,I have the problem and am not using a DVI to HDMI connector. I have brand new 1.4 HDMI cables. Also my flickering is much more often than 10-15 seconds; it happens at less than a second intervals and flashes to static snow. -
Mar 9, 2011 6:19 PM in response to Winston Churchillby WassabiMac,Tried unplugging apple tv and tv, didn't work. Power cycled both apple tv and tv, it didn't work. Did a restore on the apple tv, it didn't work. Tried to go to video settings and change HDMI and it's stuck on Auto. I think the only thing that will resolve this will come from new apple software update not yet created! -
Mar 9, 2011 6:21 PM in response to Roy Bby DomenickD,I have the flicker problem. I'm hooked to a Sony Trinitron, model KV-34XBR910. It's an older TV, pre-HDMI, so I have a HDMI to DVI cable that I've been running, and until tonight's update I've had no problems. -
Mar 9, 2011 7:18 PM in response to AppDadby chpopel,im having the same problem older sony wega, 60 inch rear projection hdmi-dvi cable.
worked fine before the update. -
Mar 9, 2011 7:39 PM in response to chpopelby Warehouse41,Sony HDMI - DVI, worked fine with last update now it is broken again with the flicker.
I have half dozen HDMI devices that work flawlessly on this TV, if Apple can not or will not support this simple function I am very disappointed in them.
This is an issue with Apple TV not out television sets.
