Should I update to IOS 4.2?

Still using IOS 3.1. I'm ok with the performance of the device, considering its age. Had some battery issues, and I'm afraid that if I update to the newer software that things will just get worse. From reading through a lot of the postings here, it looks like battery drain is still an issue with 4.2 on the 3GS.

Anyone have any suggestions? Should I leave it alone, or just get with the program and update already?

I would recommend updating to iOS 4.3. If you are basing your decision on what you read on these forums, bare in mind that only people who are having problems will be posting here on a regular basis. There are many happy people who have no problems with their 3GS, me being one of them.

But you also have to keep in mind that a lot of these people that are posting didn't have issue before updating. In my experience, when it comes to updates, at least since 4.0 (never had issues with 3.x.x updates), it's like playing Russian Roulette. You may just catch that one "bullet".

I suppose you're right, there is always that to bare in mind.

I still have the old system on my 3GS as well.

I went to the apple store and asked one of the 'genius' there the same question. He told me that if my current system was working just fine, leave it alone.

I will update to the new system when I get a new phone.

I just hear way too much negative about the 4.xx system from too many folks with the older phones like mine.

thanks for the input. I think I'm going to leave it alone, haven't had problems with getting useful apps that don't support my iOS.
I am concerned about the reliability issues with the IPhone. I don't know that it's any better with the Droid, I've been told of the same battery issues.

I guess I'm a little sympathetic about the issues, being a life long PC user. The platform for development is exploding, somewhat like windows/ibm did decades ago, but it's just catching up with apple so much faster.
Windows used to be so unstable when they experienced their growth spurt.
The biggest problem with all the little battery issues and bugs is that this has become your life. You depend on it not only for calls and text messages. It's now your watch, your alarm clock, your PDA with all your business info....ect. And forget using your sim card to store your contact numbers.
