Q: Flicker after updating (post your details)

There are a large number of instances of users experiencing flicker after installing the latest (4.2) update.

Rob (one of our hosts) asked if those with the issue would post the make and model of TV used with the Apple TV in instances where this occurs.

Possibly because his post was half way down the thread, not everyone has posted these details. Hopefully I'm not treading on toes, but can I suggest you post those details here.

You may also want to include information as to whether your tv supports 1080i or 720p or both, as well as whether your Apple tv is connected directly to the tv or through a converter, switch, receiver or HDMI to DVI connector for example. Additionally if your tv displays details of the resolution and frequency of the signal it is receiving you might want to post those details too.

Magnavox 42 inch flat screen plasma HDMI to DMI adapted. worked fine until update. flicker had made my unit useable and I am disables an in the bed 24 hours a day. This has been my only form of entertainment and with a very low income I get to stair at blank walls and have a seizure watching my tv flicker. Its Stuck in auto and resolution wont change. I cant find the model but its was purchased in 2006 Silver with speaker on either side of screen has every connection in the world except digital audio and HDMI. so I connect with HDMI to DVI converter and connect the digital optic to surround sound.

Please Fix a update soon stop this flicker and give me my tv back.

Apple TV 2 worked beautifully for well over a month. Downloaded and installed the update and now have the same flicker screen. Sony KDL42xbr950 with HDMI to DVI cord both plugged into a receiver and directly into the TV.

Get this, called AppleCare and they told me it was my frickin' TV Despite it working for well over a month, the technician said my TV must be broken. Unreal and I'm not done with AppleCare yet.

Same thing here. Worked great until this 4.2 update.

    Sony KP-51WS510

I'm Apple's biggest fan but this is driving me crazy! If I could afford a new tv, I'd already have it. This stinks!

Hi I have a Sony Grand Wega KF-42WE610 connected to my apple tv via a HDMI to DVI connector. I have the same flickering/flashing problem as everyone else since installing the new update a couple of days ago.

How long does it usually take to get these things sorted out?

    Thanks

To all of you regarding the latest APTV 2 update. The problem exists with the HDMI 'handshake' protocol. In order to curb digital recording this latest update addresses that. HDMI 'handshake' no longer conforms to the DVI interface. I have resolved my issue by tracking down the previous version to APTV 2 and denying any future updates from Apple. Good luck to all of you.

Can anyone confirm the issue is resolved with the Sony Grand Wega KF-50WE610 (rear projection)? I've been holding off on updating to 4.2 since I bought ATV2 new late last month. I'd like to upgrade if it's safe.

    Thanks!

    Hey all,

I upgraded to 4.3(About = 4.2) and can confirm that it does NOT fix the issue.

I am currently running 4.2.1(About = 4.1.1) and i have solved the issue for myself.

I'm using a Sony Bravia KDL-40V4000 40" LCD 1080P and was getting constant flickering, its was completely unwatchable, i did however discover that changing a tv settings can solve the problem.

    The steps are as follows:

    press "Home"
    scroll across to "Settings"
    scroll down to "Set-up"
    press "Enter"
    scroll down to "Screen Settings"
    press "Enter"
    scroll down to "Display Area"
change setting from "Full Pixel" to "Normal"

I remember a long time ago i changed it from "Normal" to "Full Pixel" when i was using my MacBook Pro via HDMI because 1920x1080 was not displaying correctly, it appeared zoomed in. Im guessing since the ATV2 runs 720p that the 1080p "Full Pixel" setting is causing issues. Changing it back to "Normal" fixed the problem for me.

    No more flickering.

    Hopefully this helps someone else.

after last update appleTV produces random flickering in upper third of the screen, regardless of what type of media it's showing. Using a Sony KDL 53W4000.

it did work smoothly before - so please bring it back! at full pixel!

    cheers

I have a ATV2 connected to a Sony STR-DN1000. Before the 4.2 update I had no problems at all. After 4.2 I have no video at all other than the Apple logo at power on for 5 seconds or so.

    Apple,

Either refund my money for the shiny black paper weight, or upgrade your software to allow me to use it again. The staff in the Apple store who informed me that the problem was with my TV, need a little more training on how to support your customers.
