Q: Home Sharing drop out with Apple TV2

Just did the updates for i-tunes (10.2.1), ATV2 (4.2), and Ipad (4.3). And what I'm getting is when I stream from the computer using the ipad remote app, music starts then just stops. I go to ATV settings and turn airplay off then back on, then the music start again. Then goes out again. But if I just use the ATV, music, photos, YouTube, movies, etc.. everything works fine. It just when I stream. ATV show strong WI-FI signal. Never had any issues until I did the updates. Tried rebooting ATV, did a restart on the computer. NO GO. I'm thinking it's a home sharing issue but I don't really know. Has anyone else having any problems since the new updates? Or any ideas on what I should try. Any help would be great...
Thanks

I had the same problem.  I upgraded to the beta versions of iTunes and the ATV software, and everything is working perfectly now.  You'll have a fix soon.

This problem irritated me too, but in Apple's defense, rolling out fixes for this might not have even been possible.  When you get to a certain point in the development process, you have to commit to rolling out THAT version, and nothing in the interim.  This stuff is to support things like iOS5 and iCloud, and those are MAJOR technologies.  In terms of not communicating to people, that is bad too - but also not totally out of the question considering the circumstances.

It seems reasonable that apple should let people like myself upgrade to the beta to correct the issue.

I have a birthday party for my 2 year old and wanted to show a few people there how the apple tv worked. Of course the apple tv chose the worst possible time to not function properly. I wasn't able to get any pics, movies, or music to play.

I have my Roku box hooked up as well. It worked perfectly. 2 of the people now have the Roku box.

I have a mixed tech household (PC, Mac, android, IOS, Roku). Apple isn't winning me over at this point.

The reason betas are only available to developers is that installation is not simple in many cases - one of those cases being the ATV.  You have to download several GB of stuff in order to be able to install the software on the device, which would be a huge support issue.  Again - I can understand why they wouldn't even consider that.

It *****, and Apple is certainly going to feel the effects of this - but again - I'm not sure it could have been handled differently.

Apple should consider full refunds for people with this issue or a solid discount on another apple product. Leaving people like myself twisting in the wind so they can pull it together with IOS 5 does not create good will.

I'm the Tech Admin for the company I work for. Any and all tech purchases are researched, approved, and purchased by me. This covers 3 offices in 3 different countries. This situation does not reflect well on Apple.

Last Saturday night ....100+ people in my house enjoying the music, synchronised across several rooms and the garden with ATV's and Airport Express's doing a fantastic job. Everyone well impressed.

You guessed it.....the whole set-up collapsed at the height of the party both wired and wireless.  I had to revert to an IPod plugged into the hi-fi.

Embarasssing for me,....but, unfortunately for Apple a good number of my guests were IT execs who between them control several billion $'s (not a typo) worth of annual IT spend in major global companies.  NOT a good audience to let down when they are having fun.

Please get this fixed Apple it really is going to come back to haunt you....

Your point about betas and the roll out is reasonable. As a non-technical person, I am prepared to live with that.

However, Apple's abject communication failure is not at all reasonable. If they are aware of a problem--and they must be aware of this one--they should acknowledge it, let us all know if there is a work aound and keep us informed about when software upgrades are likely to rectify the problem.

It really isn't that hard: all they need to do is put some advice on their website and post a link to it here.

Well, if I was Apple, I wouldn't do that.  It doesn't do anything for them, and it really doesn't do anything for you either - except let you know that a fix is coming "eventually".  They certainly can't tell you WHEN the new software will be released, so it's just a lose-lose for them no matter what.

What we really are all ****** off about here is that someone isn't doing their job in QA there.  A bug like this shouldn't have ever been able to get through, and on the whole - with Apple products - they don't.  Someone should get fired in QA.  Overall this isn't a deal breaker when put into perspective.  ATV2 allows me to stream a huge library of stuff from iTunes to every TV in my house, and provides me with enough content that I am close to canceling my cable service.  It's a hassle, but hardly the end of the world.

People talking about how this is going to hurt Apple are being overly dramatic.  The guy with the billion dollar friends thinking his party is going to adverslely affect their numbers is delusional.  It's a hassle.  It's frustrating.  But it's going to be fixed soon, and it's a great product.

You're right: this is a nuisance, but it isn't then end of the world. You're also right that this problem with one of it's less significant products is hardly likely to bring Apple to its knees.

I don't agree that Apple acknowledging the problem would do nothing for me. For some time, I didn't know whether the failure was my incompetence or a problem with the box. Acknowledging it was a problerm with the box and that a fix was coming would've provided comfort, however small. Telling me that connecting the ATV to the router with a cable and blocking the wireless signal would allow it to work properly in the meantime would also have helped.

Ignorance is seldom any real comfort.

I'll continue to wait for the fix and look wforward to the ATV working as it is supposed to.

Definately a problem with Home Sharing and it is getting worse.

Mine also won't let me surf the internet from my iMac (hard wired to router and modem) if someone is watching my ATV 2.

It drops the stream to the ATV every time.

But if you surf the internet on my iPad (on the same network just wireless) it doesn't interfere at all.

You are right sir.  Knowing that it wasn't you configuring it wrong, or if there was a workaround would indeed have been helpful.  No argument there.  I guess the issue here is WHEN they understsood the problem.  They may not even right now be convinced it is fixed, until they are ready to release the beta.  I can't make it fail now - but that might not be the case for other beta testers.

I'll keep posting here as I find out more.

N*t hugger. You still have a little on the corner of your mouth.

I'm sure you would feel the same way if the cable company has similar issues or maybe your car. You would just sit back and wait for a fix. No big deal.

Thanks for your useful and well considered reply.

The cable company and my car are both crucial items that i can't live without at the moment.  ATV isn't.  Maybe it is for you.  I go outside and do stuff, you moronic halfwit.

Now go away and let the adults finish their discussion.

Cable is crutial? Do you mean internet access or can you not live without your True Blood fix?

I guess the car is crutial. But if Apple made it I'm sure you would be much more understanding.

I ended up here because I am one of the many that went online looking for a solution to the problems with my Apple TV. I found that I am far from alone. I'm not going anywhere until this is fixed.

Your last line is the typical Apple fan boy response. When someone calls you on your B.S. you hurl insults or try to belittle the other person. Nothing you say changes the fact that Apple TV is broken.

If the rest of the Apple product owners were as passive as you they would still be waiting for cut and paste in IOS.
