Q: Home Sharing drop out with Apple TV2

Just did the updates for i-tunes (10.2.1), ATV2 (4.2), and Ipad (4.3). And what I'm getting is when I stream from the computer using the ipad remote app, music starts then just stops. I go to ATV settings and turn airplay off then back on, then the music start again. Then goes out again. But if I just use the ATV, music, photos, YouTube, movies, etc.. everything works fine. It just when I stream. ATV show strong WI-FI signal. Never had any issues until I did the updates. Tried rebooting ATV, did a restart on the computer. NO GO. I'm thinking it's a home sharing issue but I don't really know. Has anyone else having any problems since the new updates? Or any ideas on what I should try. Any help would be great...
Thanks

Same problem here. And today's ATV2 update to 4.2.2 didn't do a thing.

I tried two different routers with and without security. I tried connecting my computer to each router with a wired and wireless connection. Nothing changes. Every 40-ish minutes or at the end of an episode of a program, I lose the connection to home sharing. To restore it, I have to quit then restart iTunes.

Guess I shouldn't have "upgraded" from the ATV1.

Wouldn't it be nice is someone from Apple responded to this thread. Something like: we're aware of the issue, we apologize and know it can be frustrating, but we're working on a solution and should have something shortly.

Hi all. I'm struggling with the same issue. It's only on one machine oddly. Mine is related to iTunes dropping the home share - on a Win7x64 pc with 64 bit version of iTunes.

I haven't determined yet if it is just related to the 64 bit version of iTunes. Another thought after having invested countless hours in resolving this... The machine that is maintaining the home share is on wifi. Mind you it is all the same ip network...  Same ip schematic... Same router...  Firewall settings are all the same...  Oh and I hv reinstalled iTunes.

    This is really frustrating.

I think as mentioned earlier, this has everything to do with recent updates...Mine ran perfect, have had it since its release date...Apple tv 1 no issues as others have said. I'm guess a patch is in the works.

I'm having the same issues.   I have a brand new Airport Extreme, ATV2 is about 1 year old, 2.4 Ghz MB Pro.  Just started having the issues with the new airport and the ATV2 updates.

I just found this in another post:

Just looked up the AppleTV ports used. I am using Win7 64 bit.

Added the following rules to my incoming windows firewall

    • TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
    • UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.

I found the port information at the following link:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2463

I seem to be back up and running and have not ropped a connection from any of my 4 AppleTV's to my iTues library yet.

I'm going to give it a shot and I'll report back.

Add me to the list of ATV2 users who can no longer connect to the Internet, Home Share, or enter their Apple ID.

My ATV2 regularly loses connection with the PC as well (Win7-64 bit)--never in mid-stream, but when I turn on the ATV its about 70% likely it won't find my library on the network and I'll have to reboot iTunes to fix it.

What baffles me is that whenever things are in this state, all of my other iOS5 devices (two iPhones and two iPads) have no problem connecting with iTunes on the PC (via Home Sharing) at all. This strongly suggests to me that the problem (well, *my* problem anyway) isn't network related at all. It has something to do with the ATV.

    Frustrating.

I got tired of my ATV2 half of the time not being able to find my iMac library via home sharing.  So I set my iMac and ATV2 to never go to sleep, my display to sleep in 5 minutes.  Have not a problem since doing this about two months ago.  iMac stays cool even though never sleeping.

That's not my problem. My computer is set to never sleep and this problem occurs before ATV has a chance to sleep.

This problem is the opposite of everything Apple seems to stands for. Aren't Apple products just supposed to work? Ironically, my Apple product is the only networked item that doesn't work. If I power cycle my router, my printers work, my NAS drive shows up as a network drive, my Squeeezebox music player reconnects to the network and my music but the Apple TV doesn't reconnect to the Home Share.

I know things are a lot more complicated behind the curtain, but Apple is supposed to figure all of that out and make everything work like your old TV. Can you imagine if you had to play around with firewall settings to make a phone call on an iPhone.

    Total fiasco.

I have been following this thread from near the beginning and have had most of the primary issues discussed here. As of this week I declare my system cured without me doing anything but applying the available software updates. After several months of problems, my ATV2 appears to be working flawlessly now. (fingers crossed)

Just a note from the other thread that the problem has now been corrected and I am able to use Homeshare to access and play videos stored in iTunes on my hard drive. I don't know about purchased movies but my rips play as before. I did update to 4.4.2 and Homeshare works with the update. Apple must have fixed something.

Same Here my problem started with the last update, quite frustrating. Nothing seems to work, resetting the router, opening ports, resetting apple tv, turning off then on home sharing, I have 2 apple tv's and only 1 of them is having the issue of not finding my mac.
