Q: Home Sharing drop out with Apple TV2

Just did the updates for i-tunes (10.2.1), ATV2 (4.2), and Ipad (4.3). And what I'm getting is when I stream from the computer using the ipad remote app, music starts then just stops. I go to ATV settings and turn airplay off then back on, then the music start again. Then goes out again. But if I just use the ATV, music, photos, YouTube, movies, etc.. everything works fine. It just when I stream. ATV show strong WI-FI signal. Never had any issues until I did the updates. Tried rebooting ATV, did a restart on the computer. NO GO. I'm thinking it's a home sharing issue but I don't really know. Has anyone else having any problems since the new updates? Or any ideas on what I should try. Any help would be great...
Thanks

I had the same issue, the answer of RWTahoe (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17781073) worked for me: uninstall both bonjour and iTunes, then download and re-install the latest iTunes 10 (64-bit). After that all problems were gone.

I resolved the issue by updating my router to 802.11n

ttervoort can I keep my settings and stuff, just do a basic uninstall, reinstall, pick up old settings, or do I have to wipe the lot and re-import all my stuff from scratch?

Why not change your settings on the iMac for the hard drive to never go to sleep but the monitor can still sleep. iTunes has to be running in order for the ATV to receive information from it.

I just did a basic uninstall of Bonjour and iTunes (I have a Windows 7 PC), then a basic reinstall of the latest 64 bit iTunes. After reinstalling, iTunes automatically picked up my old settings, library and everything, the whole operation took about 15 minutes.

I tried that first, turned of sleeping on all devices involved, including myself, but it did not stop the home sharing blackouts. Uninstalling Bonjour and iTunes, then reinstalling iTunes did.

So just to be clear: I did not re-import all my stuff from scratch.

Had similar problem after setting up a new ATV3. After a few minutes, HD video in particular would stop playing and I would lose the home sharing connection. Had to restart ATV for it to see my iMac library again.

I fixed this by changing the settings on an Airport Express that is in the same room as the ATV from "extend a wireless network" to "join a wireless network." I have an Express that I was using to extend the range of my wifi network (and also act as an ethernet bridge to give my TV an Internet connection). Turns out the ATV3 was connecting to that Express, not the Extreme in the distant office.

Forcing the ATV3 to connect directly to the Extreme seems to have fixed things. Nor did changing these settings affect my ethernet connection; that still works fine. I guess Airport Utility meant it when it warned me during setup that extending my wifi network through the Express could hurt network performance...

Well, my issue appears to be resolved with the dropped connection while homesharing tv shows to my ATV2.  I ended up following a number of recommendations posted here over the past week or so.

Uninstalling both Bonjour and iTunes seemed to help but then the problem returned the next day.  I have both an airport extreme and express (extending my network) so it could be a coincidence that the restart of those devices resolved the problem.

When the problem returned I unplugged my airport express and since that time have had no issue.  It has been a few days without a single drop.  I am giving a thumbs up to _DUG_ as that appears to have been the issue for me as well.

What confuses me is that before the recent updates I always had my Airport Express extending my network and not once encountered an issue.  It is possible that my ATV2 never connected to the Express (for approx 1 year) but I find that doubtful.

ATV3 should be arriving tomorrow via courier...  Hopefully these issues don't return

Thanks for the info ttervoortI will try reinstalling when I have 15 minutes spare on the computer!

For others with this problem it's worth re-iterating Weeblet's workaround from the previous page. You can use the 'remote' app (or some kind of remote desktop app such as logmein if you prefer) to play the film/tv show on iTunes on your computer, and then tell it to airplay to the apple-tv (with the airplay icon in Remote or iTunes depending on how you're controlling it). I've watched a couple of movies like that and that seems to work reliably.

Interestingly, Apple have been careful to make NO MENTION OF HOME SHARING WHATSOEVER on the UK store's new Apple TV3 details.

They have obviously quietly dropped promoting this feature in light of the fact that they have screwed it up, big time.

Thanks a bunch, Apple. Game over.

    Not impressed.

Sounds like uninstalling iTunes and Bonjour and then reinstalling iTunes did not work for Weeblet. I'll wait to see how it goes for laurieknight. I have the same dropping problem, but I have no airport products on board - just a PC with iTunes and a TV running ATV2.

I have 4 wired ATVs, 2 iPads and 2 iPhones. After about an hour or two of inactivity all devices cannot connect to my home share machine that is on 24/7. Odd thing is that all devices see that share but cannot connect. This all worked perfectly about 1 week ago. Stopping and restarting iTunes will cause the share to work again for a while. What this tells me is that this is not a network problem or an ATV problem but an iTunes problem.

I'm going to try uninstalling Bonjour and iTunes and reinstalling and see what happens.

Uninstalled and reinstalled bonjour and iTunes and no help. I restarted all my routers, switches, modem, etc and no help. Restarted iTunes without restarting the computer and it started working.  There's something wrong with the latest iTunes.

    Apple help!

Same. I uninstalled iTunes and related programs following Apple protocol on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 . Then re-installed iTunes (breathing a HUGE sigh of relief when all my iTunes content and settings reappeared!). ATV2 is still dropping the connection to iTunes. The only suggested solution I have not tried is changing router settings. That's getting in over my head. I am giving up. I am not bothering to use ATV2 with Home Sharing until a fix comes out.
