iPad 2 3G acct transfer from Origianl iPad

I own the current iPad and I'm planning to buy the iPad 2 on Friday.

I have the 3G/WiFi model and will but the same in the new device.

How will I be able to transfer the AT&T 3G service from the old to the new? I called Apple Support a few days ago, but the guy I spoke with didn't know the answer...yet.

I could transfer the sim card I guess. I will be selling my old iPad so I want to be sure the sim card is wiped.

Suggestions?

Apologies to Ian but, apparently it's not just as simple as swapping your SIM card. These are the instructions that seem to be what you need to do.

FROM APPADVICE (www.appadvice.com), A "HOW-TO" regarding this very subject:

"Many iPad 3G owners may want to transfer their current data plan to the new iPad 2. You could simply wait until the end of the month to cancel your current plan (unless you want to keep your unlimited data plan). Or, you could get everything transferred over on day one. AT&T provided us with a step by step guide on how to do this:

Step 1. Find your original iPad’s cellular data number and IMEI number. These can be found in the settings app. Simply go to “General” then “About.” Here you will find both numbers. Your IMEI number is what AT&T uses to identify your SIM card.

Step 2. Call 1-800-331-0500

Step 3. Let AT&T know you would like to transfer your data plan from your original iPad to your new iPad.

Step 4. AT&T will ask for the iPad 2’s IMEI number and will transfer your plan over to your new iPad.

It is a pretty straight forward and simple procedure. We did ask about simply moving the SIM card from the original iPad to iPad 2. The representative said not to do this. It is unclear if AT&T monitors what device your SIM card is in. It is possible that AT&T could cancel your data plan if you move your SIM card from an original iPad to iPad 2.

The representative also let us know that once the transfer is complete you can sign up for a new plan on your original iPad if desired."

Thanks for re-posting this. Just went through the process to have the IMEI and ICCID updated on my account to show the new iPad, reset network settings then confirmed my "unlimited" account got copied over and verified a bit o' surfing.

I didn't ask about why you couldn't just bring over the SIM from the old one. I figured SIM swapping might work, but this seemed a bit more official and there's a record in AT&T of my unlimited being assigned to a new device if there's any issues in the future.

GSM is GSM it has nothing to do with something being backward. You CAN simply swap SIMs here but it is not the CORRECT or BEST way to do something. It is important that you carrier know the IMEI of the product you are using on their network for both tech support and security. Although this can be done automatically by the SIM/Device pairing it is less error prone when both are paired simultaneously at activation.

A) It was a joke and B) I was not referring to GSM, which, by the way, is not the only type of cell phone service in the US. I was referring to the way in which cell phone service is sold and marketed. And, by the way, GSM comes in different t frequencies. Unless, the GSM chip set handles the band you need, it won't work, even if you have a GSM phone. Admittedly, that has become increasingly rare.

Go to:

www.att.com/ipadlanding

edit payment information link...then update the following two fields:
IMEI:
ICCID:

You get this info from the iPad (1 or 2) select 'Settings' then 'General' then 'About'...

The IMEI and ICCID info is on that screen. No need to swap the SIM cards. This process outlined above transfers service instantly and does NOT change the plan type, billing, user info, or days remaining. Basically anytime an ATT customer wants to move a data plan the ATT iPad web page is all you need. No phone call!
