No sound on Multi-channel audio TV shows after 4.2 update

Hi all,

I was watching some TV shows peacefully on my ATV2 until I took a break and the update screen popped up. I decided to be a good guy and update the ATV, everything went smoothly...
Until I went back to watch my TV show and there: "surprise" no sound!
So I tried other TV shows from my library and movies, that's when I realised that only the videos with stereo audio are playing fine with sound.
All Movies and TV shows that have 5.1 multi-channel are struggling to start playing, and if you eventually get them started, there is no sound!

My setup is very straight forward, the ATV2 is plugged in my HD Ready Samsung TV (32"), and there was no issues before the update!

Talk about an improvement..... :s

Just checked mine. The 2 audio tracks (6ch AAC & stereo) were already in 'Alternate Group 1'.

If I disabled the 6ch AAC track in Subler, the video starts to play.

I then remuxed the file in MKVTools 5.1 AC3 + Stereo and that seems to fix the issue. So, it's the 5.1 AAC track that is causing the problems it seems...

So, I guess to solve it, either disable that track or remux and convert that track to AC3.

BTW, this problem isn't just on the ATV2 4.2 update, I also get exactly the same symptoms on my iPad (4.3)

tmartine was right (yet there's two pages of people complaining still).

Do this:

Go to Audio & Video>>turn Dolby off & to auto. Fixed the issue for us too.

Just because it fixed your problem, doesn't necessarily mean that everybody's problem is fixed. I had to group both audio tracks on my "home made" videos to get my surround sound audio back.

Switching the dolby setting did not solve the problem for me. Same issues as everyone else and this is very frustrating. It was the 4.3 update that caused the issue. I have called Apple and they said there is no way to go back to the previous 4.2.1 once you update to 4.3. They NEED to fix this, or allow us to go back to the good setting.

Same problem after updating to new software. Apple TV does start to play digital sound, but stops after a few seconds. When Apple TV is connected via HDMI to TV and TV to AV via Coaxial Cable. When optical connection to AV, sound is working. So I guess problem is related to HDMI out of Apple TV.

the connection you describe SHOULDN'T actually work...

what you should be doing is one of these in order of in order or preference..

1. [AppleTV]--HDMI-->[AV]--HDMI-->[TV] (if you have lots of HDMI on you AV receiver.. you connect everything to the receiver and then you have 1 connection to the TV and let the AV do all the switching)

or

2. [AppleTV]--HDMI-->[TV]--HDMI-->[TV] and [AppleTV]--Optical-->[AV] (if your AV receiver doen't have HDMI or has no more)

there are two reason that that are known to cause this

1) some glitch that switching DD off/on

or

2) the way you have structured the audio tracks in your movie file.. i.e. a) you likely need to have at least one AAC stereo track, b) apparently 6ch AAC tracks cause problems.. although i'm not sure why anyone would include 6ch AAC audio track since no receiver or other commercial devices are sold that can actually decode 6ch AAC, c) Andreas Dobbertin suggests that both audio tracks need to be in "Alternate Group 1"..

so if fix one doesn't work you could try restructuring you movie files..

Since updating my ATV2 (HDMI connect) to the latest firmware. I no longer have any audio playing with my Dvd fab videos. Worked fine until the update. Not only do they no longer play on my ATV2 but they no longer stream from my mac or pc to my iphone 4 or ipad 1 and if loaded directly on to these devices there is still no audio, both on 4.3. On all devices there are problems skipping back and forward, with the picture. Same files on my PC or MAC work played through itunes. All devices played the audio until 4.3

Hi. Wish I could throw some light on the problem! I have two apple TV's, downloaded the latest software, and now neither of them will get sound. Only solution I have found is to remove power, plug back in and it works again. Also cannot get HD movies at all. I wish when they released this stuff they would make sure it works. I had no issues with either unit before the update.
