Which FCP works on PPC G5 dual 2.5Ghz

I hope someone can enlighten me before I make another costly error with this G5 I bought for video editing. My G5 has OS 10.4 Tiger and I would like to know which version of Final Cut Pro will operate on it properly. It has been suggested that FCP 6 would be OK but nothing more up to date. Is this correct?

I made the mistake of buying Adobe Premiere Elements 9 as it has two licences - for both pc and Mac. However, I then discovered that it will NOT run on my G5 as the system requirement is for the Intel powered Mac G5. As I only found out when I had opened the software and put the disc into my G5 I cannot return the software.

Can anyone who is genuinely knowledgeable about these things kindly advise me. I know there must be people on this forum who have used an older G5 with some version of FCP. Please help.

Final Cut Studio 2 (which includes Final Cut Pro v6) is the last version that is supported on PPC processors.

Regarding your computer - if your interest is in working with DV/PAL or HDV material, the computer should be ok. If you are planning on working with current camera codecs and converting them to ProRes422 - Apple's digital intermediate format, you really need an intel machine to function well.

Good luck.

I believe it was FCP v4.5 + STP 1, DVDSP 1, etc that carried the moniker Final Cut Studio HD. When Apple went to calling it a "suite" it was with FCS v1 (aka FCP 5.0), though it was confusing as v5.1 was the first intel version (universal binary). My recollection is that even though FCS 1 was being marketed, you could still purchase FCP 5.0 independently of the suite. From 5.1 on it has been the whole suite or nada.

FC Studio HD includes: FCP 5, Soundtrack Pro 1, Motion 2 & DVD Studio Pro 4 (Plus LiveType).

But if you could upgrade to OSX 10.5 (which you may still be able to purchase from Apple by calling them, not on their website), try to get your hands on FCP 6 plus the other suite items. Just keep in mind that LiveType is no longer included in Final Cut Studio, so if you plan to upgrade in the future, use Motion for your titles instead, in case you ever need to go back and make changes.
