Moving back to Mac Mail from Outlook for Mac 2011

After using Outlook for Mac 2011 for about three months, I'm actually considering going back to Mac Mail.

Does anyone have any guidance on how to move my current/saved e-mails from Outlook for Mac back to Mail? Outlook for Mac only offers one export option - to either PST or OLM - nothing to export to MBOX format.

Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Just migrated back from outlook 2011 to apple mail, 3 main steps, but you will need a windows PC or VM

1- Copy the messages from outlook 2011 into folders, you can do that by highlighting the messages to you want to migrate then dragging them into an empty folder, this will create a list of ".eml" files, 1 file for each message

2- use the free "eml2mbx" http://download.cnet.com/eml2mbx/3000-2648_4-10788884.html to convert the .eml messages into one .mbx file, this will create an mbox file

3- in apple mail, go to import "File" then "Import Mailboxes..." then select mbox format, select your .mbx file and it should import all your messages

note: sometimes the name of the file in mac osx will not be accepted in windows, like having "\" character at the beginning for example, I had a couple of files out of 8000 messages which I manually corrected

Outlook for Mac has .pst import but not .pst export, .olm is your only option for the whole thing, .txt for contacts only, it's a dead end.

If you are just moving mail then satcomers method should work, contacts can be exported to .txt and there are free converters you can download that will convert them into a format for MacMail, I have yet to find any way of exporting the calendar other than .olm, which is only readable by Outlook for Mac 2011.

If you are using an iMap or Exchange account it's much easier, who is your provider and how is your account configured?

Hi all

I am assuming that you managed to get it done, but just in case other people wish to do this, I have written a step by step procedure for doing this. I managed to transfer ever email from outlook for mac 2011 to Mac Mail, without any problem at all. I have been looking to do this for months and have finally managed it and I am delighted that I am completely on Mac for my email calendar and contacts. Good Bye Microsoft!!

Thanks Michael,

I have been trying for the last couple of months to find the answer to moving from Outlook, luckily found your way and it was so easy.

I had also thought that I would have to buy Eaglefiler or such to get this done, but hoped that there was some one like you around to help the plebs and not fork out $40 just to use the application only once, because I won't ever be going back to Outlook again.

Thanks again

Richard
