We had a PPTP VPN connection on our department iPad. I upgraded to 4.3 and now it won't connect to the vpn. Has any one else had this problem? We know the vpn works, we connected an 4.2 iPhone. VPN device is a Nortel 1700.
I tried this on iOS 4.3 GM and it didn't work on PPTP, I didn't try it with L2TP and PPTP. Now I've changed to IPSec and it works fine 🙂
I hope they fix it ASAP
I use a PPTP VPN server that is built into the DD-WRT v24 preSP2 firmware for a LinkSys WRT350N. I have no issues connected PPTP with my MacBook Pro using this connection via my air card, or other WiFi. I also have no issues with my Windows 7 computer, or my Windows XP laptop.
Under iOS 4.2.1, my iPhone connected flawlessly to the PPTP every time. Since upgrading to iOS 4.3, I noticed that the VPN would not connect. I checked the settings, deleted the connection and then re-created it. Still nothing.
Being that I am stubborn, I kept trying to connect. Eventually after about 15 tries it connected. Even after connected the first time, future connections yield the same result. I only get connected about 5-10% of the connection attempts, but eventually it will connect and transfer data. Once connected, it works great.
My best advice, be stubborn and just keep attempting to connect and with any luck it will eventually connect.
Just to let everyone know, the new iPad doesn't work either on PPTP (obviously because it is running iOS 4.3) I have managed to get it to connect using L2TP but it keeps dropping the connection every 10 seconds or so. I have no trouble with the MacBook Pro. My previous iPad also had a problem with PPTP after the previous update but it was intermittant and I thought it may have had something to do with the WiFi but since 4.3 it won't connect at all.
I have the latest-gen iPod-Touch and also noted PPTP connect issues after upgrading to iOS 4.3. Though for me if the first connection attempt fails, the second attempt usually succeeds. The PPTP server is pptpd (pop-top) on Linux. iOS 4.2.1 connected flawlessly.
The pptpd logs seem to suggest the iOS 4.3 connection timeout is too short and the GRE tunnel closes, even before any authentication occurs.
I have just purchased an iPod Touch 4. And when I mean "just purchased", I mean yesterday night. I activated it today with iTunes and it installed me iOS 4.3 (as a result I couldnt do any tests with iOS 4.2)
I have just tried setting up VPN connections over PPTP to 4 of my servers (I run a small scale VPN business). To my surprise, none work!
I get random results.
- Sometimes I get "starting..." then "disconnecting..." then it stops
- Sometimes I get "starting..." then it stops
- Sometimes I get the error message "Couldn't connect, please contact your administrator" or something.
All the VPN accounts work fine on my PC in Windows 7. I'm going to test them on MacOSX but they should work fine too.
Yes, I think that is what everyone is getting now. It's definitely something to do with the upgrade to 4.3. The VPN is still working on my Macbook Pro but not on the phone (that has been upgraded) or the original Ipad which has been updated or the new Ipad2. I think there was a problem with the previous upgrade on the Ipad too. The phone which has not been upgraded is working fine too. I live in hope that Apple will sort this out soon. I wondered whether it has something to do with the new security measures and whether the VPN is actually receiving the login information from the ipod/iphone/ipad. What's the use of having the VPN facility on these items if you can't use it.
Ok, So setup my bosses ipad a while back to connect to our network, he upgraded to 4.3 and getting the same problem as you guys.
Checked the logs on our server and it says GRE port 47 is either blocked or timing out.
Was thinking it was his router at home, but it also fails on 3G as well.
My phone 3GS has been updated and connects everytime.
Is it possible to re-apply the update and see if that fixes it?
I'm working with Apple Support on this right now. They walked me through pulling the logs from the iPad2 with the Enterprise Support Tools.
Here is the information from the Networking Log:
Sat Mar 19 14:45:20 2011 : PPTP connecting to server 'home.xxxxxxxx.net' (50.84.71.xxx)...
Sat Mar 19 14:45:20 2011 : PPTP connection established.
Sat Mar 19 14:45:20 2011 : Using interface ppp0
Sat Mar 19 14:45:20 2011 : Connect: ppp0 <--> socket[34:17]
This same VPN works on my iPhone 4 (Jailbroken 4.3.1) and my MacOS X laptop.
This is very annoying, and what's more annoying is that none of those fancy gadget related sites write a word about this problem.
PPTP and L2TP are not working at all.
They have to do something about it. Vpn in iOS 4.2.1 was working great.
One of my users called support, they told him it was his problem, he directed them to these posts. They now realize that it is a bigger problem and are escalating it. Now we have to wait and see.
II have an iPhone 4 which had all of my profiles in it. It has been upgraded and they still work. I have a new ipad2 and nothing works...
on the iPad 2 attempted sessions terminate quickly and before there is an "authenticating" message.
Well, I just spent over an hour on the phone with Apple. I was transfered five times and the result was that the advisor informed me that since only their Enterprise support team knew anything about VPNs I would have to pay for a support agreement to get this issue resolved. After I informed him that I would not be paying to fix their broken software he transfered me to a senior support advisor. Or at least tried to. None were available and he has assured me that I will be getting a phone call back today or tomorrow. I will be shocked if that happens since I was also promised a phone call yesterday after the logs were reviewed.
I'm starting to think that a Xoom might have been a better choice.
I took both ipads to a friend's house 200 miles away from mine to see if it could be a problem with my router but no, it doesn't work there either. There is also a major problem with streaming video on the ipad from some sites. I think this may be a quick time buffering problem as it just goes round and round and round and connects and then disconnects. So not only can we ipad users not access flash video but streaming video is also a problem. All in all I am beginning to agree with you about a Xoom and I am a die hard apple fan, everything I have is Apple. Surely we should not have to pay for a support agreement for a problem with their hardware/software?
