The bottom line is that Apple will no longer provide updates for the 3G. If you have concerns about that, sell your 3G and buy something else. Discussions about it here will get you no where.

I have zero concerns about my 3G's security because in the right environment and right hands, nothing is secure. I think you're being overly concerned about a very, very small risk.

KC7GNM,

Actually I would have to say you are the one who does not get it. The 3G was sold until June 2010. Expecting Apple to support it for a period of time after the last sale is not unreasonable. I have no issues for Apple not supporting older products, such as OSX10.4, but I think that expecting security updates for my iPhone for 12-24 months after initial purchase is reasonable. There are lots of people who are in that 12-24 month window, and some who are still in their first 12 months.

Ok let me put it this way. The phone does what it was supposed to do when you bought it, right? Apple is not obliged to provide any updates at all. They do because they want to. Obviously they think the 3G is mature and does not require any more updates. Again if you don't like it then tough. This is a user forum so complain to apple, not us.

Dears KC7GNM and paulcb,

With all due respect, you are confused and do not understand that covers security issues for all users of iPhone 3G (without and with Jailbreak). Apple has a serious security problem with iOS because obviously does not consider security in the life cycle of software development (SDLC) and also it is not defined on its official website the product life cycle for the iPhone.

Do you understand what this means and its true dimension? ... Think please !!!

With all due respect raoulec...

I do think...

- I think that the 'security issues' are very minimal and a very, very small risk to unmodified iPhones.

- I think you're overly concerned about it.

- I thnk that it's not going to change and you should direct your efforts elsewhere.

- I think you should get another phone so you can sleep easier at night.

And lastly, I think I'm done with this discussion as it's leading nowhere.

Have a nice day.

I just found out about the fact that my iPhone 3G hasn't been privy to security updates for the last 6 months.

I only bought the phone a year ago as part of a 2 year contract - I since discovered that it was drawn from sale a month later!

At the time, I wasn't knowledgeable in iPhones and was told there was hardly any difference between the 3G and 3GS, so I went with the best price.

I have phoned Apple and my service provider over the past 2 days and have been treated with nothing but comptempt from both over my security concerns and grievence at being sold a phone that stopped being supported 6 months later.

I read a lot of the same attitudes in this thread and it makes me wonder...
