Screen Flicker with External Monitor

I have a brand new MBP 17 inch running 2.3GHz i7 with 8GB RAM.

When I connect my 24 inch Apple Cinema Display, I get constant flickering and the screen trying to re-size on the Cinema Display (the display for the laptop is unaffected). Not sure if this is being caused by Thunderbolt (it is the same port now as what you would use to connect an external monitor in previous Macs) or not, but this is an annoying issue.

Anyone else having this problem? Apple are you listening?

I dunno guys, it really irritates me to think that we have to buy a cable to make the $3000 investment we've made work again. I'm not doing it. Planning to escalate in Apple service. I'm sick of this! and I don't often get this mad.

You're right Allison, we shouldn't need to be buying extra things to get something that already worked fine to work properly again.

Plus I really want a "pure" solution with 1 cable, withou adapters. That's why I bought the mDP - HDMI cable in the first place and that was a good $50.

I've already called without any luck and I've had the same result at the Genuis Bar. I've also submitted bug reports to Apple via their feedback pages.

How can we escalate this further?

I just bought the new mac mini with lion and i get the same problem.

My monitor is a LG W2753VC and im using 1080p

Using a DVI-DVI cable its just impossible to work. Noise is everywhere and the monitor sometimes blacks out for few seconds before it restores the image.

After going out to buy a HDMI-HDMI cable that plugs directly to the mac (no adaptor) it reduced quite alot but still i get flickering and noise glitches quite often. It still blacks out my screen too.

note: while writing this post my monitor blacked out twice and i just lost count on the glitches/flickering. Appl get to work and gets us a fix

I cannot believe this issue has not been fixed yet!!! COME ON APPLE.

I have escalated and had an Apple person I was emailing directly with and who finally told me to basicially bugger off and wait for the firmware update. I agree with others.

A $3,500 computer and $1,000 monitor should work as they were promised to. I should not have to go out and buy another stupid cable.

Not to mention the last time I got a cable the Apple Store guy gave me the wrong one so I am having less and less trust in their advice these days anyway.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS. IT IS AFFECTING MY WORK.

I've fixed my screen.

I wanted to reduce the amount of glare, so I removed the front glass panel from the Cinema Display (it's a 24" LED). It's very very easy, just use suction cups. You can get them from any home store - even small ones will work, the kind that are used behind hooks that suction to bathroom tiles or kitchen tiles. Suction the front and pull it - it's only held on by a few magnets.

Removed the glass and kept it off... since then, no screen flicker (switching on and off) or horizontal tearing across the bottom. Working great for 5 days now.

Not ideal for everyone, but maybe a clue for Apple.

Same problem here (just adding my name to the list if this isn't getting the appropriate attention from Apple). Brand new 2011 17" MBP Pro (Thunderbolt) some upgrades - $4200 machine with a $900 monitor. Slightly older (DisplayPort) 24" Cinema Display and I can't use it - the flickering is (randomly) occasionally so bad I need to unplug and use the laptop directly. Worked fine with my 15" 2008 Macbook 3,1 with a Displayport to DVI adapter.

This is not up to Apple's QA standards - didn't they test this before releasing the Thunderbold MBP's?

Downloaing 10.7.1 now - fingers crossed this solves things. Can anyone confirm it has?
