4.3 SMS Tones - Choo Choo

I love my iPhone 4 but I cannot understand why my favourite sms tone 'choo choo' has been changed by IOS 4.3. Actual functionality has been withdrawn and I'm really annoyed about it. I accept it's only a small change but surely a software update should add functionality, not take it away. I'm a passionate supported of all Apple products, but this change absolutely stinks and I'm furious about it.

A little bit of an explanation..

Up until iOS 4.2 the SMS tones had remain completely uncustomizable and had been the same tone set since the original iPhone in 2007. Obviously the addition of new tones was in high demand and long overdue.

When they were added in 4.2 many users complained that after all this time waiting (nearly 3 years) the newly available tones were ridiculous (sounded like a cartoon soundtrack) and extremely long for an SMS tone. So Apple modified the tones for this release to a much shorter length.

While I agree *the spirit of the Choo Choo is lost when reduced to merely one Choo*, the overwhelming feedback that the tones were inappropriately long for a text prompted the change. Regardless, it is beyond me why they don't let you use your own audio for a text tone as they do for a call ringtone.

On a positive note, at least they finally offer the vibration to be differentiated!

Sam,

whilst I appreciate your response, there is no positive way to spin this. If these 'users' you speak of wanted shorter tones, there are many available on the presets that would suffice. Modifying tones already in existence for the benefit of a few vocal forum dwellers is crazy when they already have suitable alternatives. The overwhelming response I've had from talking to people about this is that they're unhappy and disappointed with what feels like a loss of functionality.

I love to Apple to bits and am a vocal supporter, but I receive a lot of texts and this modification is completely unacceptable. Updates are supposed to bring features and improve the user experience and that's not what's happened here. If only I could revert to the previous version...

If you read his posts carefully he did not try to put a positive spin on it. He is also not referring to vocal people on this forum, he is referring to people who took the time to send in feedback. But beyond this I believe Apple was also responding to reviews of the iPhone, both in print media and blogs, which overwhelmingly complained that many of the new text tones on the iPhone 4 were way too long. And while I used Telegraph and Choo Choo, etc., to be fair I must say that I had more than a few people complain about them when I got a text. I just wish the editing of them could have been a little more elegant but I do believe they ran into technical limitations.

I also agree with Sam M., this could all be avoided by allowing custom text tones. Then if we want to irritate people with a long, obnoxious text tone we can. So use the feedback link that has been posted here and make yourself heard.

Morganator,

As deggie already pointed out I am agreeing with you. I am also disappointed about the change as well. Apple takes the feedback they receive through those forms seriously and it was quite apparent that users were dissatisfied with the length as they were. I would say the old phrase "you just can't please everyone" but in this case I really do think you can - just let us choose our own and provide both sets of lengths 🙂

Updates are supposed to bring features and improve the user experience and that's not what's happened here. If only I could revert to the previous version...

I am sure to some users they do consider this as an improvement to the user experience. You often don't hear them though as few come to these forums to praise the improvements as they are already satisfied. The ones that do, like you and myself, post with new problems such as this. If you are really truly devastated and want an immediate solution, there are ways to revert to an older iOS version that you may find somewhere online- but be very careful as it is totally unsupported and extremely risky.

Thanks Sam, I've searched around and reverting is not an option. I have logged my feedback via the official channels mentioned in the thread, but I will continue to push this topic as experience has taught me that companies only take notice when they're hounded.

WE WANT CONTROL OVER OUR SMS ALERTS JUST LIKE WE HAVE OVER OUR RINGTONES.

I'd expect this sort of action from Microshite, not Apple!

From someone who has a new iPhone 4 from Verizon that is NOT getting the update right now---I hope that we either DON'T get it or they smooth out the wrinkles before we do. What a mess, if judging by all the headaches 4.3 is causing. AND I really like my "Choo Choo" and would hate to lose the second "choo" too!

Watching the same thing with iPad2...not a single posting on that part of the Apple forums from new iPad2 owners pointing to anything that much more useful on the new iPad that is dramatically different from what is on my iPad1 (including a successful and error free update to 4.3OS on it too).

Maybe I expected to read more useful tips on using the devices from people who have well-functioning units rather than just problems. From what I can tell by reading these forums the Apple hardware/software packages have just as many problems as any Windows environment. (I've been glitch free on my VISTA laptop for over 3 years with numerous OS updates!) Oh well, nature of the situation: squeaky wheels tend to dominate support forums.

I hope everyone with problems get them worked out and fixed. I've probably jinxed myself now and will be back with a "help me!" post in the near future....

Bingo. Few people post praise or begin a thread like "I have no problems with my iPhone. Have a nice day everyone!" It's common for many new forum users to overestimate the number of problems a product is having just because the only posts they see are posts with a problem. Think of it like a hospital. Healthy people have no reason to visit, so if someone were to walk inside one they would think the human population is doomed because there are only sick patients inside.

Hope this clears that up.
