MS Word printing to pdf without borders

So I've been all over the Internet trying to find a solution to my problem -- couldn't get Word to print to a pdf without a white border around the page. I finally figured it out, and I hope it works for you!

In Word file, go to Page Setup:
Settings - Page Attributes
Format for - Any Printer
Paper Size - click here and then click on Manage Custom Sizes

Click + to add new size - name it PDF borderless
Click in the paper size boxes to make 8.5 x 11 (or whatever you need)
Make sure Non-Printable Area says User Defined, and change margins in boxes to 0
Click OK

Go to Print menu:
Printer - choose any
Presets - Standard
Click on PDF - Save as PDF
Choose file name and save location
Click Save

Voila! I'm so happy!!

Not sure if this post and the replies were pre an upgrade of some sort, but people were still saying thank you for this fix last year so I may as well share my discovery.

I had the same problem and it was 'Go for Joy's mention of borders that got me thinking.

A really simple solution to this, if you are wanting to print A4 to PDF, is simply to choose the A4 borderless option in the File/Page set up/Paper size drop down. Click on A4, then hover on the arrow, wait for the options to appear and the choose A4 (borderless).

Then print to PDF as normal. My A4 PDFs now have no borders.

There are borderless options for a few paper sizes. For anything other than the standard options i.e. the ones with arrows you'll need to use 'Go for Joy's method.

N.B. You do have to make the borderless selection for each individual file.

Hope that helps.

Hi Go4Joy,

You are indeed great! Just one problem...I tried to create a PDF of a 5pp Word document with a picture cover (photo pasted onto the Word document's first page) and the PDF came back in two halves - regardless of what I tried - with the front cover in one file and the 4 pages of text (with inserted pictures) in a separate ".2" file. How do I create just one file like all the rest of the methods?

Cheers!

Hi Foodie,

The only way I managed to do this is to click somewhere in first section and then:

  1. Cmd+P
  2. Page Setup
  3. Select Paper Size: PDF (borderless) - the one you created as Go for Joy described

Than click on next section of Document and repeat the process (Cmd+P,...).

Do this for all sections and you shouldn't get splitted files.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Mitja.

Hi Mitja,

It did not work for me quite the way you described. But what I did was to "Select All" from the "Edit" menu of Word (instead of setting up each page separately) and then I followed all previous advice: i.e. cmd+P - Page setup - PDF Borderless - Save as PDF.

And it worked PERFECTLY! All pages were in one PDF file; no splitting.

Many thanks for helping me to find my solution! :-)
