Static when recording with microphone

Posting from my new iPad 2. Has anyone else had issues with the microphone? Whenever I record from any app there is tons of static when playing it back.

IPad 2, iOS 4

Take your new iPad2 back to the retailer and ask him to fix it or replace it.

Same issue here, I think. Here are some additional symptoms from my 3G(GSM) 64GB iPad 2:

1. Almost pure static recorded from the built-in microphone
2. Some recorded audio/dialog may be audible, but basically unintelligible
3. Recording through external microphone or mic+earbuds works fine
4. Plugging in an external mic causes the iPad to "chirp" for a second with the static sound
5. All apps (FaceTime, Camera, GarageBand) are affected

So, I took my iPad in to the local Apple Geniuses and, after a quick test behind the scenes, they gave me a brand new one. Looks like this issue isn't immediately serviceable by Apple, but at least they had some stock on hand to cover my replacement.

It doesn't seem like this issue affects a great number of iPads (display issues seem to be more common), but it's certainly a deal-breaker if your iPad's internal mic doesn't work properly.

I thought this was just a problem with the 3g units (Apple has 3 different microphone assemblies WiFi only, VZ and AT&T).

My iPad 2 VZ 64GB microphone zapped after 18 days (first heavy static, then it just would record at a 95-99% audio reduction). Geniuses 1st tried doing a low level firmware wipe - but that did not fix the hardware problem.

Apple Genius Bar will replace with new one in 3-5 days (although the people waiting daily will get theirs earlier, the "new" service models have to come from Apple Engineering in a "white box."). Ugh.

So I am one more joining the group . after "thinking" about it , reading some stuff from the internet and doing some tries , these are what i have figured out .

Please note that these are not solutions , they are thoughts and might be 100 % wrong.

1) The The front-facing camera assembly includes the camera, headphone jack, and microphone and passes just exactly underneath the magnets from the smart cover. (please if possible each one with the issue verify that you own a smart cover) .. after reading not sure if I was reading @ the correct sites , i have found out - understood that the wires from microphones are protected with a magnetic shield.
So , i think , I had faulty magnetic shield at those cables and with the smart cover the issue came up - p.s. my microphone worked fine for some days .

2) I did some restores .. at my first restore -set up as new - i opened the camera app to video record and test the mic by talking , I did not hear my voice , but I was not hearing the static noise either. 2nd restore I think the sound is worse than the first time i spotted the issue . 3rd restore is being done at the moment so if there is something new I will post again. - So could it be firmware wise ? If yes, how come it worked for some days ?

I had my ipad2 for about a month and everything worked great! One day, I decided to plug it back in to my macbook pro so I can make a backup. iTunes asked if I wanted to upgrade to iOS 4.3.2, so I clicked yes.

After the upgrade, the microphone only recorded static. Coincidence? I don't know but after I traded my ipad2 for a new one, I am not going to try that again. iOS 4.3.1 is fine with me.

Yes, I am using a smart cover. I tried restore and was able to continue to reproduce the issue.
