Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

Of course it is most of the ipad 2 that have issues. Its a manufacturing **** up to be honest, and i think the reason why there taking this long to get ipads into stores is that they have identified the problem and they are rectifying the issue.

Either way just return the ipad and wait a month and buy it again.

I purchased an IPAD 2 WI-FI-3G 64gb Black AT&T from Best Buy on March 30, 2011. Noticed the light bleed on the lower right corner, upper right corner and bleed patches around the left frame. I went to the Apple store to verify the defect. They ordered another replacement which arrived today. I shared my concern with the store manager. I asked him where the technical bulletin is to show the defective block of serial numbers. I also asked when the new IPAD 2 in production will have a remedy. He didn't have an answer. I let him know that I did not want to be a beta for Apple. I returned the IPAD 2 at Best Buy and receive a refund. General Motors operated like this for over 40 plus years. This will catch up to Apple. I had a lot of faith in Apple. I like the products because they work and had excellent quality.
I am now a Petimysticguy regarding Apple. Not a very good customer experience at all. End of Story.

so i followed your advise, very helpful by the way .. thanks to everyone 🙂
I took my defective Ipad 2 to the nearest best buy, the guy there told me that he would have it inspected by one "expert", so i waited to see what they would do about it, the expert came back and he told me the most st*pid words i've ever heard.... "this Ipad is not defective it is just dirty, you just have to clean it"... i was stunned 0_0/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic__ _/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/ migration-img-not-avail.png well then the manager told me that if i still wanted to return the ipad, i told him that i wanted to exchange it for another one, he told that they couldnt do it because the didnt have any in stock. then i mentioned that my 14 day grace period was about to expire and that what it would happen if they didnt receive any before that time.. then he told me another st*pid thing... "well thats the dilemma..." 0_0 agaaaaiiiin User uploaded file do they really care about the costumer... so i want some advise from you :S
i dont know what to do, there is no apple store anywhere near me... i should try contacting apple to see if i can send the ipad to the nearest apple store for an exchange??
mmm please help :/ i would really appreciate it

Ok, well I think the majority of people reading this thread are resigned to the fact that there is a big problem here. My questions are,
1, Will Apple admit the fact that there is an issue?
2, If so, what would their official take on it be?
3, For those waiting for "a new batch" without the fault, when will we know when a new batch is available and will it be cured of the light bleed/leak issues?

I've posted earlier on here. WAY back right after launch day. I see nothing has gotten any better.
I've got 2 iP2's that are ugly. I know some people have commented to basically just get over it and be happy we even have them. I've offered mine up for sale..full price...so far no takers. All talk, no walk, huh?
Yea...go spend your own $2000 on the best units and accessories....then tell me how you like being annoyed by the yellow-white GLARE of the leaks. NOT fun. I rarely use this compared to my IP1 I had...and stupidly sold.
So...mine are going back TODAY to BestBuy. No trades. Not right now. I did not buy AppleCare, but I did file a case for each unit with them a few days after purchase.
I'm just going to get my cash back, and probably just buy a couple iP1's for now...if I can find any. THEY were good equipment. I never use FaceTime, so the only thing I'll miss but be ok with is the itty bit more speed. I don't care about garageband, or imovie right now either.

I've watched this thread since day one...and it only makes my decision that much easier.
My spouse was at a work meeting today, another person there had an iP2, he asked him in general,.."How's the light leak on that thing?". WITHOUT QUESTION OR HESITATION this guy knew EXACTLY what he was being asked, and replied that it "SUCKED". But it was work-provided, so they are just living with it.

As a personal payer...not going to happen for me.
Good luck, folks.
Hopefully the iP3 will be a better option at some point. Whatev.

I'm so frustrated with this, I hate NOT being able to be proud of yet another Apple product. VERY disheartening.

AppleBits, the nature of your post is a major issue IMO. I actually emailed Tim Cook (not expecting a response) about this very thing. Something is inherently wrong when people would rather stick with (or even go out of their way to find) old tech (iPad 1) vs new tech due to quality issues. The iPad 2 was my first iPad and I LOVED it. However, seeing 8+ splotches of light-leak around the screen (not at 100% brightness) was a deal-breaker for me.

People expect much more from Apple because we always thought Apple expected better of Apple.

Apr 6, 2011 8:14 AM in response to Dawgfanclark

Yep. I agree.
I LOVED the iP1. That was the ONLY reason I felt like the minor upgrades in the 2 would be worth the extra dough. I just figured it was Apple...it will be spectacular, and at the very least, as amazing and gorgeous as the 1. But it's sooo not!
I'm doing total restores on the both the 2's right now...then I'm off for the big refund...and hunt for the 1.
Hey...let us know if the big-wigs actually address your email. It would be interesting to get SOME feedback from them on this.
Thanks!

Interesting. Bought the iP2 with 4.3 on it, I connect it to iTunes, tell it to do a full restore. It wants to put 4.3.1 update on it, I say fine. It works it "magic"...only to get an error, telling me I need to do a restore! Geeee...ya think?? So now it's just stuck on the stupid itunes plug screen and won't update or restore. What a piece. On my 3rd try. NOPE. Same error. You know what....APPLE can deal with it....this is CRAP!

Apr 6, 2011 8:29 AM in response to AppleBits

My dilemma was whether or not to take an awesome deal on the iPad 1. at&t is offering the 64GB 3G iPad 1 online for $529 (but $629 in-store WTH?). I had an Apple store manager offer to price match but him (and my wife weirdly enough) convinced me to stick with the iPad 2. I had to return two and am waiting on a third. I have a $900 Apple Store credit and I went back to buy the iPad 1 but apparently Apple has pulled the iPad 1 from their retail stores. I have 4 Apple stores near me and all of them said they are out of the 1. I would have already bought the $529/$629 (I think I could have gotten the at&t store to price match their online price) if it weren't for my Apple Store credit (yes, I'm the guy that is considering selling his Apple Store credit on Craigslist, at a LOSS, to possibly buy an iPad 1.. how jacked is that?).

It's so jacked that I am even considering all of this and not just super-stoked in anticipation of getting an iPad 2.

Apr 6, 2011 8:49 AM in response to Dawgfanclark

Well, one of them won't restore at all. So I couldn't keep it if I was stupid enough to want to. The other, not sure. I just deleted everything and will let them deal with it. So that's .... 2 units at $830 ea, and 2 $70 magnetic crap covers, plus tax. Hmmm...
That ***** about your dilemma, Dawg! Man...
And here I'm ***** cuz I just lost out on the cost of some other accessories....
Good luck to ya...to us all....
