Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?
Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.
Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.
Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

The issue is buy new expect new, not buy new, get refurbed.
I for one could not be bothered with the resultant merry-go-round. When I saw the state of my first 1pad2 64gb and then the others in the store, I simply asked for my money back.
Poor show indeed.
I agree. If you buy new you expect new. (That's why no one can sell refurbished as new.) And, if you're not happy return it.
My point is: Don't get on the exchange merry-go-round. Either return it for a refund and wait (or not), or complain and wait for a solution. I like the "written guarantee" from solution erikfsn above.
Apple gives a fourteen day grace period within which most products can be returned provided they are not damaged in any way. After that period any defective products are repaired or replaced within the 1 year manufacturers guarantee. Apple does not provide you with a new product if yours is defective, they provide you with a refurbished one. Defective Products that are received by Apple are repaired and then sold as refurbished or used to replace defective products.
After 6 months with my iphone the sound went. I took it into an apple store. After verifying the problem, they gave me another iphone that did not come from a new box but from a cushioned plastic bag. It was clearly a refurbished iphone.
I hope this answers your question and apologies for the delay. I would also direct you to the corporate page where you can read apples policy.
I was quite concerned with this issue while awaiting my ipad2 to arrive. Got it today and absolutely no leakage. Not even a little, which my first gen has. I wonder what percentage og units have the problem?
On my 4th iPad 2, Black 64gig Wifi unit. I live in Vancouver, Canada and had a friend buy a unit from Austin for me a few weeks ago. First unit had yellow blotches and bad bleeding, Apple Canada let me swap it out for a retail unit. New one had a dent and worse bleeding so they replaced it again. 3rd unit had a little bit of bleeding but had a yellow gradient from left to right which was insanely distracting. Especially since I read stuff on the web on it. Went back to the Apple Store and instead of giving me a retail unit, they ordered a replacement which took about 5 days. Picked up my unit today, I am syncing it right now but so far it looks really good. Crossing my fingers that I have a keeper!
I bought a 16 gb black model on 25th march (cdn launch)
My iPad had significant light leaking and a dead pixel.
I went to the apple store at fairview mall in Toronto today and saw a genius.
They were extremely helpful! They acknowledged the problem and
Gave me a new iPad.
However this time I opted to get the white one instead.
I'm happy to say, after a through examination in a dark room with full brightness,
There is no light leak on this one! No dead pixel.
I guess I got Lucky.
Funny thing is that I initially wanted a white one too, but the
Store was sold out on launch and I had to get the black one!
You can add my "now refunded" iPad 2 to the list - shocking customer service (Glasgow Apple Store) backed by poor products!! Really not acceptable
When I called Apple "Care" (I use that term loosely) and they said that a software update would sort the issue - software affecting hardware like that? Not likely! And if it did then what does that say for their coding skills?!
When I took the unit into the store (Apple retail, Glasgow, Scotland) the lady that did the refund said that it was not the first and would not be the last unit that she had seen with the issue. Yet Apple have still to comment on what is causing it and what they are going to do about it.
I have given up on the apple store... they told me I need to let the adhesive dry. I have set up to receive a call from apple support, maybe they will help me.
I would find a manager personally (I did and am working with one at my local Apple Store). I personally gave the "glue" 13 days to dry.. nothing changed. In your case glue has nothing to do with a dent. I would likely return a perfect screen if my iPad 2 was dented.
I'am now on my fifth ipad 2 and it still has 80% light leakage. I have now decided to contact Apple Europe I have also printed this thread along with a two page letter. I suggest other people if they have time to do the same!

Why bother with exchanging the ipad a million times obviously its highly likely you are going to get a defective ipad. Just get your money back and wait a month or so.

And don't forget in the UK there is the 'Sale of Goods Act' which gives the consumer certain rights irrespective of the sellers T&Cs.
Oh certainly, but i doubt you would even need to mention the SGA ( you know retialers hate when people say that lol) from how obvious the defect is.
Also you have rights under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 where the credit card company is liable for any breaches of contract and misrepresentation (in this case the defective screen). If you have paid using your credit card.
I returned my ipad on the 5th day now im tempted to just wait for ipad 3
Got a replacement instead of refund against my better judgement. They did offer to let me inspect before leaving the store but you can't really tell under those bright lights.
Anyway, screen bleed is even worse than the first and the case is splitting again on this one; just above the front camera and just below the home button.
One of the plugs was not wrapped and the box was smothered in manufacturing debris, from grit to metallic pieces.
Will definitely be getting a refund this time - Apple obviously has some major problems at the assembly line. I'll let others be the guinea pig.
