Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

Please don't let this sway you from having your iPad 3rd gen, if you have an Apple authorized seller, take it there to exchange and have them open the packages until you find one that you see is a good one. If you have no apple store or apple authorized dealer, then exchange it the apple online store. Keep trying!  It will be worth it. I got an iPad 2 that after a month the speaker stopped working during FaceTime. Apple exchanged it immediately without shipping costs. This new one had no light leaking at all as was my first one.

    Hi everyone,

these are 2 pictures I took light bleeding of my 10 days old "new iPad 3rd gen".

I won't show where it bleeds. You guys tell me where the problem is and should I gamble in exchanging for another one.

**** yeah. I've been lurking at macrumor forum and others that the problem still exists on iPad 3's. Not only backlight bleeds and flashlights but also a lot of users are getting rainbow colors of tint, usually the yellow, red, and pink across the screen.  The affected area are also dimmer than the rest when viewing full white screen background or webpage with white background...uneven whites, uneven tints. That's something I cannot tolerate.  I'm glad I didn't even buy the thing.... not going through the mess.  There are people now that don't even bother exchanging it for another one as they knew they will end up making the trips 10 times only to get a less defective one or the worse one.... they just return it for refund to save their time and money.

I can't believe they still haven't fixed this. I have up after 3 iPad 2 replacements. I live with it.

And there are also what we call "light exposure" on iPad 3's.

I just bought an iPad 2 in store last week and found a white spot and yellow areas on the screen when i unpackaged it. Can't believe this problems has not been fixed after a year. The length of this thread shows that this is no minor problem.

Unfortunately i did not get a replacement but had to send my iPad 2 in. I am now waiting for already a week before even using it. The store (Gravis, Germany) told me i even have to wait another week because of Easter. That's really annoying. Can't give it back either.

I returned it, customer service is horrible, he treated me like I wanted to cause problem to them.

he said this is NOT a known issue to iPad (i thought it's supposed to be known issue, and for a known issue, users have to live with); and kept rushing me to point my finger on an e-agreement for replacement one with carton box (not a retail box one), no more refund, no more replacement ... WTH, i bought it within 14 days ...

without Steve, iPad seems to have more problems than before. Apple should be aware of that ...

so far new iPad has : overheating, backlight leakage/bleeding and wifi problem ... sigh ...

It's definitely not a universal or even wide-spread issue.

Do the math yourself; over three million new iPads have been sold since launch.

If this were a significant problem, we'd definitely hear about it (even a 1% failure rate would mean a return of 30,000 units.)

FixYa reports that 15% of iPad users report display issues:

    http://blog.fixya.com/pr/feb/

This may not be completely representative. But it doesn't sound like a 1% problem to me.

Anyway. I've got an iPad 2 with a defective screen and am now waiting for over a week for a replacement.
