Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

    I'd say any of the three are possible resolutions. That is between you and Apple. If it were mine, I'd request an exchange.

    Assuming of course they had any replacement iPad1 stock left in my local store then that is what I would also consider doing after first checking the iPad1 for any screen bleeding at the store, otherwise if the store didn't have any iPad1s then I would request either an iPad2 as a replacement (no screen bleeding problems apparent of course by checking it at the store) or request a full refund.

    My iPad 2 just went back for a refund. Guy in store played dumb for about 5 seconds, but I could tell he knew EXACTLY what I was talking about. I'm sorry but you don't pay nearly £700 for something which is primarily a ‘big screen’, and for that ‘big screen’ to have a problem such as bleeding and yellow blotches on it. If other people want to hand over their hard earned cash and “make do” with something like this then fine that’s their choice. The reason why I wanted a refund was due to the fact this is a manufacturing problem, so a replacement is just going to result in another defective screen (chances are this will be the case for the time being). I would rather have the money back in my bank and wait for Apple to fix this at the source (e.g. factories), or just wait to see what competitors do, or get the iPad 3 if it takes too long for them to solve the iPad 2 problems (or they just state it’s within design tolerance and lower their quality standards - hopefully meaning they lower their prices in line with other manufacturers of equally low standards). This being my first ever Apple purchase it has taught me to never be the first to buy a newly released product and also Apple charge a premium for being luxury technology products (e.g. the best), maybe the right to charge that premium is fading as they just become like every other mass producing technology company, focusing on quantity and less on quality. Was considering buying the new iMac when it comes out, not sure now, that’s a pretty big item to return!

    Tim,
    you did the right thing. The current ipad 2 is terrible. Conversely, the ipad 1 screen I have is sublime. No bleed at all.

    Something has gone wrong in Apple manuf/design. I am sure 4 weeks in, a lot of this will be resolved.

    I bought a 32GB White Wi-Fi for my wife for her birthday. Wasn't noticeable until we used the alarm in a low light room and all four corners were leaking light prominently. She didn't say anything but I took it into Apple and the girl who checked me in said "you too?"... The Genius (one of 15 there) said he just had one and they verified that it's not normal, So they brought me a new one from a secret stash and swapped it out for me. I asked the Genius what happens when this iPad has the same issue and he said wait 3 or 4 weeks and ask for another exchange. By then Apple should have addressed the issue in manufacturing and the updated units will be in stores.

    This one is not as bad in all four corners, but in one corner it's obvious and along one side. I've had this issue in the past with Laptops and Apple has been fussy about fixing the issue. They will however replace your whole LCD on a Macbook Pro if a single piece of dust gets behind the screen... (which they're doing for me as we speak). I'm going to exchange this unit in a month or so or when we find out that the issue has been resolved. I'm picky about screens and it's not a huge deal for a couple weeks.

    After five iPad 2 exchanges I have decided all iPad 2's have this problem,! I spoke to an Apple employee today who exchanged my iPad 2 for the fifth one and he just said hold out a month and exchange it.

    Also because I have been messed around I got a free leather smart cover a iPad dock and an Apple HDMI cable for free!!! So I can't really complain however I did laugh when they offered me a smart cover I was reminded of the iPhone 4 saga and apple's quick fix problem seems to be giving away free cases

    I just got my replacement iPad 2 on Wednesday of this week after notifying Apple I had an issue with my iPad on March14th.

    They called me and left me a voicemail to come in and pick up my replacement.

    Needless to say...I get there...he brings out a brand new one (64gb 3G Black) and I tell him I want to make sure the new one doesn't have the same defect...well...it does...not as much as the original one but still has a leakage issue....And he already had performed the swap so I had to take the new unit...he told me I can just come back for another one if I'm not happy..

    No one in the Apple store I frequent here in NY doesn't acknowledge that there is an issue...they all kinda let on that they know it's an issue ... So the end result for me is I will wait just like many on this thread for another few weeks (4 or so) for another slow boat from China to get here with units that have whatever assembly line fix they most certainly have had to implement.

    My question is this, if you wait a month, will you end up with a refurb? Or new?

    Also, you return and exchange for a new one after 7 days, and they give you a new one, do you then only have 7 days to do a return for refund? Or do you still have 14 days?

    Curious, mine shipped today, and I live over an hour from an Apple store and just don't have the time to keep running back an forth.

    Just received my iPad2 a few days ago. It was supposed to ship April 1 but they got it out a week early. It has very slight 'leakage' but certainly nothing I'd bother complaining about - it is only slightly visible in total darkness under certain screen conditions.

    It's quite obvious that some of you are never going to be happy with the screen no matter what, so just return the **** thing for a refund and buy something else that isn't going to make your life miserable and fill up the threads about the supposed 'leakage'.

    Some peoples are worse than others. Mine for example was visible at even 40-50% brightness setting in a normally lit living room on anything with a darkish background. I'm happy with all the other devices i own with LCD screens.

    In approximately 10 years of LCD screen ownership of varying types and manufacturers, the current Ipad2 screen I had was the worst of its type for bleed.

    Completely unacceptable. Hence the refund

    The brown box stuff from Apple are service parts I assume they are returns and refurbs! Also I noticed if you get a replace unit within 14 days your warranty starts when you get that replacement which is good!!

    Oh my word. Is this what we do now? Become post assembly technicians?

    Books on a 1000$ device? What next - pavement slabs on a TV? a tree on a car roof? Finishing of cooking the food at a restaurant?

    I advise you return and let Apple step up and burden their responsibilities.
