Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

You will be angry if Apple resolve an issue you are happy with?

You are not concerned but you think people are overreacting? You know what people are complaining about but they should just enjoy the screen as is.

Why are you posting any of this?

    I think you are confused.

No what I am saying is yeah I see the problem and it's pretty bad for a modern screen to be produced like this but having said that I could live with and will do if apple say it's in spec which I could believe, but if they bow to the pressure and manage to fix it then I would be pretty annoyed with them right now, in a few months though I may no longer care about it at all and if they do fix it then it may be as easy as getting a replacement.

Really it's not that bad, screen in all other respects and uses is excellent, it's a bit like having a dead pixel but maybe not even that bad...

I don't understand why you would be angry if apple sort the problem out now. Surely this is a good thing that they are acknowledging a problem and are doing what any decent company would do when faced with customer complaints.

On that point you don't make sense.

I will agree with you that it is still usable and it is a magnificent device but when you fork out the amount of money we are talking about you do expect above all other things that the screen you look at is clear of defects which it clearly isn't.

If you are happy with a defective device then fine - but don't be **** with apple for fixing it quickly.

I would not be happy with the fact that by fixing it they are acknowledging the first ones available are not up to standard yet let 4 weeks go by without doing anything and letting people buy them, I would only be happy if they issued a recall.

That said I just watched a YouTube video with top and bottom borders and could see no bleed granted I do have brightness at minimum and when I turned it up to max a little bleed was visible but it's only really bad at max in a dark room.

Congratulations Apple, I have gone back in tech (to the iPad 1) due to repeated quality issues with the iPad 2. If I had not experienced it myself I might have a harder time believing many here that are upset about their screen (light leak and mushy/lifting). I had my Apple Store credit refunded and I went to BB and bought an iPad 1. I would have bought it from Apple but apparently iPad 1 stock was pulled.

Feel free to contact me on this as I would love to give some feedback on my experience. Your service was amazing but I am likely to skip the iPad 2.

Your argument sounds like complete nonsense. I think deep down you realise this.

Good luck with your bleeding slab. Enjoy it in the bright light. No night time darkness though please. You know how that will make you feel.

No disrespect but you haven't a clue what other people's normal usage is. Getting a little bit sick of other people suggesting we are being too fussy.

BTW - I haven't even bothered to sync this replacement to iTunes - the backlight bleed is that bad the edges are coming apart. Complete junk device.

I'm not a troll; have been using Apple products since 2004 but have noticed a stunning decline in quality control over the past 12 months. If I want crap, I will buy Dell and Windows.

Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.

    Dangfang,
No one is going to contact you.
This is a users board not a board where the company emails you back etc,

If the bleed looks like sh*it and is sh*it then its time for a new, less sh*it screen Apple. FFS boys, get with the programme. This is getting very dated. Get a working etch-a-sketch out, not this heap of s-h-it.

I received my ipad 2 yesterday. LOVE IT! Unfortunately when I was watching a late night movie I noticed light coming through the dark screen in four places. I called Apple today and they told me to return it. They would either fix it or give me a replacement. Fixing it would be out of the questions as it is a brand new, 12 hour old ipad2. After some time on the phone I decided to send it back to get a full refund. After a few month I will order again. I would have held on to it and exchanged it at a later date. Unfortunately, you only have 14 days for a refund.

I was very surprised when Apple (store and online) told me my issue was isolated to a few.

Apple are being clowns on this. There is something called the internet, where people share their respective problems. They take 'isolated' issues and make them cumulative. This 'engine' then allows the people to share, question and affirm their displeasure.

Come on Apple. We know. You know. We know that you know. Don't be mugs.

I totally agree. If what I have been told is true and it is a "Bad Batch" then apple should make a public announcement otherwise customers who have been duped into buying these below standard units may never really notice they are defective.

When I also contacted applecare before taking mine back they said this was the first time they had come across it, they even tried to suggest it was the wallpaper I used for the background! At the time I thought mine was an 'isolated' case until I decided to Google (or any other good search engine) it.

Its like the iPhone4 and antennagate. I bet if they hadn't owned up and admitted the problem the majority of customers would have accepted that it was an isolated case.

I learnt to keep things in perspective a long time ago when I read a similar lengthy "moany" thread on AVForums (which I believe you also frequent) about backlight bleed on the Sony W5500 TV. It almost put me off buying one but I did anyway and was (and still am) overjoyed with it.

So the moral for me seems to be that "unhappy" new owners actively seek out venues for posting their displeasure. In this case AVForums and the Apple Forum are two examples.

Where are all the "happy" owners? Too busy enjoying their latest toy to bother looking for a relevant Forum to tell everyone just how much they are enjoying their Ipad2.
