Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

Apple is acknowledging that it isn't acceptable. you're slamming the device as whole again because of a screen defect that you can only see a small % of the time? like i said earlier, i'm picky too and i've already spoken to Apple and plan on replacing mine a month or 2 down the road. the iPad2 still blows away the other tablets out there. i'd take backlight leak over a friggin Xoom (with an X, how cool) any day.

Please link to any statements from Apple PR source that say anything about them aknowledging the screen issue and / or what they plan to do about it.  Anything else is hearsay.  It's been over 1 month since launch and they're an 80 something billion dollar company with an arsenal of engineers that would be considered geniuses by any standard.  It's clear to me that they don't plan to ever fix this.

As I said before -- Look at what happened with Intel and the Sandy Bridge chipsets -- they did the right thing -- they notified the public and issued a recall.  It cost them almost 1 billion but they did the right thing.

And what was the problem there?  The 2 on-board 6gb sata ports *MIGHT HAVE* became unusable over time due to some kind of meterials thing.....If they wouldn't have said anything I bet you not one person would have noticed it.  Not one!

Everyone makes mistakes...It's OK as long as it's admitted and end users are compensated.

Im slamming the device as a whole because it's very cheaply manufactured and has little (or no) quality control.  You can see some of the worst devices on the earlier pages of this thread...how devices like those could pass QC is beyond me...the logical explanation is there is no QC.  These are devices that are so bad that the screen is completely discolored even in high light conditions.

iOS is a great software platform.  The first gen iPad was (and still is) a great device...I've had no issues with the screen or build quality or speed of the device...in fact I would go as far as to say the 1st iPad is manufactured better than the 2nd gen...and still is.

I bought a 64gb wifi on opening day and the light leak has been there since day one.  I finally took the iPad to my local Apple store last Saturday.  As usual, the customer service was exceptional.  They ordered a new one for me as they were out of stock.

The light leak really didn't bother me unless I was watching a movie on Netflix, but I'm glad I took it in for a replacement.  Hopefully, the new one will not be defective.

Apple store called to say my replacement was in. Genius acknowledged the issue, went to the back to test a few and gave me a new one. Not AS bad as my first one, but still significant light leaks!

He said to simply open another case #, wait a bit and swap once it's been fixed. He said it's a manufacturing defect at the factory. Duh. I'm not going to drive myself nuts over this, but I plan on keeping on top of it until I can receive a unit that is as good watching movies in the dark as my iPad 1 was.

Frankly, i'm shocked that anyone has gotten a replacement that's leak-free...

Can you get this person to go on record with his statement that it's a manufacturing defect?  I'm sorry but it doesn't look like anything is being done about this...Can you say what store and what tech's name is?  Everyone I've talked to at Apple claims they know nothing about this (including local stores and phone support both sales and AppleCare).  It's been over a month since USA launch -- if they were going to do something about it, it would have been done already.  As I've already stated, I've gone through FIVE ipad2's and they all had problems with the screen.

I think there are two options return the ipad and get your money back or keep swapping out. I believe everyone at apple is trying there best. Does anyone really think they want to give you an iPad 2 with a bad screen? I think the only statement anyone will get from Apple is the 1 year hardware defect warranty, which does cover the screen. Why else would they be swapping out iPad's? When I got my iPhone 4 and it kept dropping calls I was upset at first also, but I just returned it and moved to a phone that worked for me. I am also swapping out Ipads but am willing to be patient because I like the product. I like the product but can live without it. I called customer support and they were great and processed the exchange quickly.

apparently applecare support are telling people that serial numbers where the forth character is the letter f is likely to have lightbleed issues, can anyone support this theory? my returned ipads all had the letter f as the forth character in the serial number.
