Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

    If you would have read, I already returned my 5th iPad 2 for a refund a few days ago (yes, 5th one, all 5 had a defective screen).  Not trying to rain on anyone's parade -- if you or anyone else is satisfied with a defective device that costs over $500, or think that a company knowingly shipping and selling defective devices is accetpable, great.  I think it's wrong.  If you or anyone else has forged some sort or emotional attachment with your device, and your pride or ego is hurt by my and others complaints; then I apologize. 

     

    I don't see what any of that has to do with this thread...this thread is about posting our experiences, information, and complaints about the device, helping each other out as a community, and getting a resolution to the problem that we have.  Anything else outside of that discussion is off topic, and imho counter-productive.  I already stated a collegue at work has a Xoom -- I've used it for quite a bit; there are no problems with the screen.  I haven't used android extensively enough to determine if it would be a good fit for me; and the Xoom is even more expensive than the iPad 2..so right now I'm going to wait for others to post their experiences, and hopefully a resolution to the problem me and other users are having will come.

     

    I *want* an iPad 2 -- I want one that doesn't have any problems with the screen -- I think that's why we all bought them in the first place, no?

    Is it really too much to ask for?

    No man not at all, you are HELPING us Getting more attention to the issue is a possible resolution...I'm talking about all the people posting nonsense about how they don't care about the isssue and how "you shouldn't either" blah blah blah...;p

    130,000 plus views and a 3rd defective display on an Apple Ipad 2, Black, Wi-FI, 3G AT& T. I waited 4.5 weeks from the Apple online store. Apple has lost their focus on QC. Very frustrated with the Apple reps that sound like they have never heard this before....I feel like I am at Disneyland. They must go to Disney University for their training to learn how to act! Every time I ask a question the response was I dunno. They do not tell us anything.....Such APATHY! They are drinking the Apple Kool Aid and are in denial. I was always fascinated how Steve Jobs in the early days turned this company around. His drive, His focus, His vision! I am  just observer and customer who  feels, sees and hears the apathy and indifference and tone in the Apple Employees. They do eventually help and are nice. I just think this IPAD 2 has hit a ceiling and is ignored by the leadership team at Apple. From a customer interaction point of view. This buying experience has not been fun. I like to experience Apple's products because they are innovative and they just work. This IPAD 2 experience is turning into a lot of head games. Steve Jobs are you listening? Please communicate to us. Let us know you heard us and are fixing this issue. Just saying...

    P.S. Maybe in a few months when the wait times come down from 2-3 weeks and they ship in 24 hours perhaps the defective screens will be fixed. I will buy one when I feel the defective ones go away.

     

    P.S.S Here is a thought with all the Billions made  Apple could bring the manufacturing back to America. I bet there are a lot of Americans who would like the work! Could help the US economy and keep the dollars here. Besides maybe the average American could afford to buy if you offered manufacturing jobs here in America. Heck Look at Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, BMW, etc...They have plants here. I'm just saying... Thanks for listening... Watch this:

    Or, perhaps, what you're seeing is just the way the screen on the iPad 2 is; what you consider defective may just be the limits of manufacturing at that particular price point.

     

    If you can find one you don't consider defective, that's great, but after five in a row I think you're going to have to play "take it or leave it."

    Hey Gadgethoarder, 

     

    I have had three iPad 2's and they all have been bad.  Didn't buy first one from Apple, but after I returned it to the Apple store along with two additional replacement units that were bad, they gave me a Gift Card.  If i knew Apple wasn't going to step up and replace defective units with "quality" units, I would have returned my first one to where I bought it and got a refund.  So I can't "MOVE ON".  I'm stuck with their fxxxing gift card which I can't get a refund for.  Other people are probably in the same boat.  After you return your origianl to the Apple store, you are screwed.  I've ordered another one online like the Apple manager suggested.  Pretty sad when you can't even get a quality replacement from their own stores.  And that one I will receive on April 30th will probably be defective also.  Then I have to drive another 25 miles each way to return another one.  They've got you by the balls.  Not as easy as you make it sound.  Dummy up!!!!!

    What do you work for Apple??? Their products are at a fast quality decline!!! Don't excuse them, SIR! Millions of people rely in apply products! I consider that a big deal! Dead pixels in nearly every display I have come into contact with, the filthy towel wiped display I have under my glass, not to even mention the light leaks is NOT EXCUSABLE! Obviously you are contented with Sh*t and are not relevant here! Go spam some other forum!

    Ah, the old "you must work for Apple" gambit.

     

    Look, go ahead, tilt at windmills if you want, I really don't care, it's your life, it's your time.

     

    But basically a product is a product.  If someone has had five "defective" products in a row, odds are the product isn't actually defective but rather people don't like the way the product is produced.

     

    Products are made from components with tolerances; some may be one way, some may be another.

     

    Often those tolerances are related to the cost of the component.

     

    If you don't like the quality of Apple's products, don't buy them.

     

    Here's a simple test - look at others of the same model at the Apple Store.

     

    If others have the same issue, it's likely a design issue and it's likely just the way it will be.

     

    If others do not, your unit is defective and should be replaced.

     

    This isn't just an Apple thing; it's called being a consumer.

     

    Millions of people rely on products from lots of companies, but if those companies start spewing bad products, the only way they will change is if people start buying other products instead.

We are ****** at the lack of quality control with the manufacturing process, not the actual product, as it is quite a fantastic little machine. Your lack of intelligence is annoying and a bit condescending. Please stop replying.

     

    They don't have to be crappy! Bringing attention to where they are going wrong is part of the job of the consumer!

    You stated that there are 130,000+ views to this thread. Views really don't mean that there are that many people having this problem. There are about 667 posts to this thread. That doesn't mean there are 667 people in this forum having this problem because there are multiple post by the same person. Less than an half of a percent of the people who viewed this thread made a post. 

     

    Gee... Going by this thread you would there should be tens of thousands posts.

    My screen has significant light bleed also.

     

     

    Although I don't expect absolute perfection, I've got dozens of devices with LCDs - including a Macbook Pro with 1920x1200 screen - and I've never seen 'bleed' like it.

    So you are saying that due to the price differential of the two products mentioned one should expect that the lower priced iPad be inferior due to it's lower price???

     

    Weak argument and IMO patently false, I sincerely doubt that Mr Jobs et al designed and expected this flaw, this is a manufacturing defect plain and simple, has NOTHING to do with price point...

     

    I hope it's not a design flaw and cannot be fixed with tweaks to the assembly process...I am awaiting my third one...will report back once I get it.

     

    Apple has and continues to be tops in customer service in all of my interactions with them regarding this and in the past with any other issues I have had with them.

     

    Cautiously optimistic in NY...

    Do you think everyone that bought an iPad reads this forum?  Maybe under 1%.  I'm sure there are 100K's of people out there that don't even know they have a defective unit.  When you are in Best Buy or any other electronic store, ask people looking at the iPads demos if they have heard of the defect.  Not one I have asked has even heard of it.  Apple hasn't made a statement about it because they realize 80% of the iPad owners don't realize they have a problem.  They don't want to deal with them.  I talked to Apple's Express Lane with my case number and talked to three different people.  From "Call Director" to "Tech" to "Senior Advisor" and not one of them could tell me if my 4th iPad replacement, which will arrive 4/30, will be free of "defects".  How "fxxxing sad is that?  I hope you are not just looking at this forum as an indicator of how bad this "problem" is.  I have been treated well by the Apple store people, but my patience is used up.  After, hopefully, this problem is solved, I am done buying any Apple products.
