Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

I got the same line from the AppleCare tech I talked to this past time -- his name was Tony.  He offered me a swap.  I told him I would gladly take a swap if he could promise me that the replacement unit he would send me would be free of defects.  He said he could not make that promise.  He was very considerate, and honest -- and that statement alone from him should say quite a lot (to all of us) -- that he could not promise me that I would be sent a defect-free unit...It's like he can't even stand behind his own company's product....

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers, but how many of you are using an iPad 2 just to stare at a black screen anyway? I heard it does a lot more than that... ;-)  Honestly, is it noticeable when you are running apps on it or surfing the internet? When is this "defect" ruining your experience with this device? IDK... I should be getting mine tomorrow and I'll give y'all my honest opinion then, not that it matters... :-)  Hope you all are having a great day! :-)

More nonsense posts from "gadgethoarder" -- sigh.

I suggest we all ignore these "it's not really a problem" posts from now on instead of becoming argumentative or attacking the poster...it's  counter-productive.

Q: "When is this "defect" ruining your experience with this device"?

A: When watching movies, using Photos app, games or any website that utilize the color black.

Theres no need to even respond to gadgethoarder's question (or ones like it) anymore chotty...we all have done it many times throughout this thread...we don't need to justify it anymore.  There's a problem -- we've proven it...we've taken pictures, videos, and documented our experiences. It needs to be resolved.  As I said -- some people think it's acceptable for a $500+ product to have yellow blotches eminating from the corners of the screen and others don't.  If you're happy with this quality and you don't care about the big yellow blotches leaking into the black bars around your movie or app \ browser screen -- that's awesome; how wonderful for you.  I and others are not.

Exactly! We love the iPad! Not the manufacturing process! This is extortion and it is wrong for people to not know about the defect. They will find out! I have a video up gaining momentum about the problem! You have to see it to believe it. YouTube is picking up on that and has elevated it in relevance. 44 pluses and many many comments!

Take your cause elsewhere.  I'm absolutely fed up with this crap.  Return your device for a refund if you hate it so much.  Please keep your nonsence off this forum, you are wasting valuable bandwidth as well as wasting oxygen by breathing.

You are right about the ignorance of the general iPad 2 buying public to this issue...

I was in a local store here in NYC called J&R Musicworld to get a case for my iPhone 4, they are pretty much a NYC institution and they have a whole floor dedicated to Apple products... and I went to the iPad section and talked to a couple of the sales guys and guess what??

They havent had a single complaint from all of the customers who have bought iPad2's and this was the first time they ever heard of it period....

    and so it goes....

In what way is it "extortion?"

Did Apple force you at gunpoint to purchase an iPad 2?  No?

Then you can return it at most retailers and of course at the Apple Store unless you ordered a custom-engraved device.

As far as complaints go, it largely depends on whether the issue is important to you or not.

Pointing out this issue is like hanging around a Porsche dealership demonstrating how some of the dash trim pieces can rattle - a valid point, but only a certain percentage of people buying a Porsche will care. (Even more to the point, if you try to get that rattle fixed, they will generally try two or three times then you'll be told your car is "functioning as designed" and Porsche will not pay for any further attempts to fix the issue under warranty.  Alas, there's no option to return your car.)

So what I'm trying to say (I'm still not an Apple employee) is the iPad2 is what it is.  If you're annoyed by the display's shortcomings in manufacture, return yours now for a refund if you can, and I suppose you can keep trying to exchange it as long as Apple will continue to do so.

But obviously if it's just the nature of the parts used in the product, that very likely won't help, so a mention of the multiple exchanges might still get you a refund, depending on who your original merchant was; talk to a manager if need be.

I'm not trying to be an apologist, just pointing out how the consumer electronics marketplace actually functions in most cases.

If you want to continue to lobby, I suspect as was the case for the iPhone 4 what you may win from Apple is an extended return period rather than any change in the product's design per se.

The fact that you have time to hang around a Porche shop and notice imperfections just completely devalues your argument, which you never had in the first place so for the love of APPLE, PLEASE STOP TALKING!

    I didn't say I hung around Porsche dealers, I used a simile.

But if I did, how would that be different than hanging around stores selling iPad 2s in order to show potential customers this issue?

Just got back from the Apple Store. I showed him a pic of my wonderful light show from the bezel I had taken on my phone. He didn't even really look at it. No questions asked, he just started me replacement order. 3-5 days for a replacement to come since they didn't have it in stock.

The process was painless so I can't complain, just wish I didn't have to take it in for a replacement in the first place. Here's hoping the replacement is better.
