Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

I just got out of my local apple store.  This was e third model they gave me including the original, and this one had light leak and dead pixels.  The genius/rep took it and said she couldn't see either of the three dead pixels in the dark (I see one if them right now in bright light on a white background) and she told me they are no longer replacing for light leaks, as the company feels that there are more pressing matters.  She offered to replace it one more time but not take it back for screen issues (light leak or dead pixels) or I can get a refund.  I chose the refund,so now apple is going to ship me a box to send in the iPad and i can get a refund.  However, I do want to keep the product, I just want one free of defects.   Anyone else get a similar response?

I'm on my second iPad 2 (Danish store)

Same issues, second one was worse than the first.

If the third one I'm having a look at tomorrow also has leakage I'll keep the cash and wait for Apple to sort this out.

Oh, and when I had the first one exchanged the guy at the shop told me he'd had others with the same problem.

We buy Apple because we expect a better product.

photo 2.JPGWell I can proudly say on my first exchange of my iPad 2 I got one with no light bleeding or whatever you want to call this. I got mine at launch and didn't really notice it untill I came on this forum, but mine was pretty bad all around the border of the ipad and one that came out about an inch to two inches on the right side of the screen. I took it to the apple store on the 26th of april and the genius who helped me said yeah its pretty bad and they didn't have any in stock so he had to order me a new one. not sure if I got a refurb or what not but the replacement did not come in a brand new apple box moreless a well packaged shipping box with just the replacement ipad 2. I keept my old one until the new one arrived at the store. The pictures are with the brightness at full. Looks like apple is taking action which is good to see.

Has anyone else had any success on getting replacements or new units that had no issue?  I haven't tried again lately.... this thread has been dead.

    An update.

The third iPad 2 had no issues with the screen.

Either I was very unlucky the first two times or there is a fairly serious with the QA from the factories.

I am happy now but shouldn't really have had to replace a brand new product twice.

I have an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow. The rep told me he could not guarantee they would even have one in stock for me but I'd rather try that than ship my iPad off, wait 7 days to get a replacement, and have it possibly be worse than my first one. I'm hoping (if they have one in stock) they will let me take a look at my potential replacement to see if it's even any better. This is really frustrating because I love everything else about my iPad but this issue is so terrible. I also want to get an anti-glare screen protector but there is no point until I can get an iPad that doesn't have screen issues. The upper left corner is the worst for me, with significant yellow "blooming" and light leakage all around the edges, especially the bottom. Hopefully Apple is doing a better job of sorting this out now that it's been nearly 2 months...

got a replacement today and the screen looks good. i did see a couple little leakage spots at full brightness but it's minor enough that i can live with it. now my concern is, will it get worse? is the smart cover causing the leakage to get worse over time? i may just be mistaken but it seemed like on my first one the leakage did get worse,

3 iPads here and none of them have this issue. Maybe some of the early iPads used a different adhesive that let light through. I haven't seen any *brand new* iPad with this issue.

I went through the same cycle of action that you are going through right now a month ago. I have gone through three. Still same issues. I am waiting for my 4th. All of them have had defective LCD screens. I am expecting my 4th to be delivered via the online store on May 10, 2011. I'll post to let everyone know if it a good one.

Hang in there everyone. I have been trying to get a good one since the release. Not a good experience from Apple on this product release. The jury is still out on this one.

Third time was a charm for me!  Frustrating for sure but when I got one without light issues, all was better.

I have had a similar issue as most people.  I bought one on launch day - lots of light leakage, replaced for a second one 2 weeks later and the same thing if not worse.  Ended up getting a refund and ordered from Apple online.

Its estimate is the 9th of May.  I have seen on other forums that this issue appears to be getting better - might be due to this:

My 3rd iPad2 was fine. Apple phone support rep said "some, but not most of the first batch had this issue. The displays come from Japan, earthquake disrupted supply. Issie was found and fixed @ the factory. new shipping iPads do no have the issue. The been proven both true and false on this forum... good luck to those still doing the "Light Leak Swap"!

it looks like we finally have an answer to who was causing this problem...LG, and that's why the LG phones were having the same issues.  Source:

    http://gizmodo.com/#!5799368/does-your-ipad-2-have-backlight-bleed-blame-lg

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/05/06/light_leaks_with_lg_ipad_2_display s_make_samsung_apples_new_primary_supplier.html

It seems LG has halted production and Apple is switching to Samsung for the iPad 2 displays...which should NOT have any problems...so anyone who gets a "good" one probably has a samsung display inside of it instead of LG.

Now, we have two credible sources here and a statement from LG -- Apple needs to stop playing dumb about this problem and they need to swap out defective units no questions asked.

One replacement was all it took for me! I brought my iPad in to an Apple store today, and the genius was kind of making me nervous by saying things similar to what some other people have been hearing from Apple employees: that light leakage isn't really a defect since so many iPads have it and they cannot do much about it. However after taking mine into the back room he agreed that mine was defective (it had that yellow "blooming" in the left corner as well as light leakage along the bottom and sides). He then explained to me that he told me what he did earlier because he's had numerous customers who get incredibly nitpicky and are on like their 12th iPad or something like that. I can understand why he would be frustrated by that, though in some cases, people really do just  have bad luck.

He said he couldn't let me go into the back room where it was dark to look at the replacement's screen but assured me he saw nothing wrong with it. It looked fine to me in normal lighting so I took his word, went home and tested it out. Bam. Perfect. Hopefully everyone gets their issues resolved soon, it looks like the problem may be getting better.

My Ipad 2 I believe has the same issue as described above. I was hoping thatit was something that would go away with time as a similar issue did somewhat correct it's self on my Iphone 4. However after well over 150 hours ofuse this does not seem to be changing.

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/151/15149648-1.jpg

With backlight set at about 50%.

Not sure if i want to replace it yet as it appears that some of the replacementshave the same issue.
